w124 weak brake when reversing

W124 E 300 D 1995

Brakes are weak when first backing out of driveway. Otherwise, they seem to work pretty well. Fluid is 9 months old. No leaks at the reservoir or master cylinder. Why would the weakness occur only when backing up at only the 1st start of the day?

Its normal, its because of the gearing in the tranny. If the idle is lower you wont notice it as much.

I'd guess that the vacuum has leaked down and has not recovered yet (as in diminished brake boost).

Next time try backing into the driveway, and starting/leaving with the same routine (same amount of time from starting the engine to pulling out of the drive/first brake event). If the brakes feel a similar weakness, it is likely vacuum/boost.

Could also try letting the car warm up for an extra minute or two and then see if it still does it when you back out.

I had the same symptoms of weak brakes when first started and only idled when my vacuum pump was bad (leaking front cover on old type) along with having to rev the engine a little to get it to shut off with the key.
