you've got to pull the steering wheel, to get to the stalk. if you remove the kick panel, you can unplug the stalk, and remove it through the steering column shroud after removing the plug (be sure not to mess with the position of each pin), pulling the wiring harness through the steering column, and carefully replacing the pins into the plug (or just repair the contacts without disturbing the pins)

huh, i mite be wrong about the flashers in that case. will have to compare my 190e and w123. by the way if you pull back on the 190e stalk and no high beam, it could also be a faulty stalk

On the W124 the housing goes around the steering column. So you have to pull the steering wheel. It's not the case on W123.

I have this problem with the 190E. Nothing happens when I pull back on the stalk, but forward activates the high beams. My guess leads to the combination switch.
Thanks for the clarification. I'll need to edit myself on the SD, when I pull back, all three filaments are lit, when I push the stalk forward, just the high beam bulbs are energized.
Sorry for the confusion.
The 123's are different.
And yes NY300SD, you'll have to pull the steering wheel to get to the combination switch on a 126, not so on a 123.

in order to pull a turn signal/light switch/cruise control stalk on a w123, you need to pull the steering wheel. period

I'll disagree, just work off the rubber surround, that will expose the screws you need to remove. A friend was helping me remove some parts from my '82, he handed me the switch, he did not remove the steering wheel.
First pic is 123, second is a 126.

you know what, it might be possible. unlike the w201, the w123 stalk doesnt' go around the spline of the steering column, so it may be possible to get to it by just removing the shroud. but do you know how easy it is to remove the shroud, without cracking it? it's very hard. you might be better off removing the wheel.

What are you talking about? All you need to do is peel the rubber cover off, remove the two mounting screws and unscrew the two wires. Then unplug the stalk wire and cruise, and everthing just slides out of the column. No need to remove "shrouds" or steering wheels on a w123.

Chill Pill? I think you need to take one. I wasn't the one emphatically, positively, sure of yourself of how that assembly is put together.

I was just correcting you to not lead a fellow member to remove unnecessary items.

Can anyone confirm that replacing the stalk has fixed this problem. Several people I know have this problem. Its VERY common.

heres my take....

assuming the headlight bulbs are fine and all fuses are good, if the high beam flash does not work, I would first check the terminals of the stalk inside the steering column.

Its actually fairly easy to check. Just remove the rubber cover of the stalk at the steering column. You can eyeball it thru the steering column opening if there are any wires that broke off their terminals. If difficult to see, stalk can be unfastened from the column and can be checked more closely.

Ok, on our 87 300sdl the "flash" used to work pulling back on stalk. Same on our 85 300sd. Both are now not working-probably as they said, the combo switch. One difference I noticed is that the 87 300sdl will turn on fog lamps without low beams, but the 85 300sd will not use fogs w/ out low beam..is this normal?

I have an 85 300D and the fogs only work on low beam. They are not designed to stay on once you switch to high beam.
