240D slowly shutting down

In the last week there have been a couple of instances where my engine has gradually shut down, rather then abruptly as usual. There is a switch on the back of the ignition tumbler that was replaced about 5 years ago. The door locks have been disabled, so it's not coming from a leak in that system. Last night I removed the line from the back of the injection pump to check for oil and there wasn't any. I did this while the car was running, when I put the line back on the injection pump the car immediately stopped. Could there be an issue with the vacuum pump? thanks

If you suck (with mouth or mity-vac) on the tube leading to the shutoff valve does the car shutdown right away - may be a faulty shutdown valve?

Possibly, but it's more likely it's a vacuum leak somewhere. Don't know why the car shut down when you reattached the hose. Was the key off? If it was, response was normal.

The rubber hose that attaches to the IP is cracked. Replace the rubber hose.

Some guys will just put their mouth around anything.

The if replacing rubber bits doesn't fix it hook the mighty vac to the hose and verify that it pulls a good vac and quickly.

In my case I ended up shimming the shut off valve a bit. Everything was working fine it couldnt just pull that extra 1/16" of an inch.

Thanks guys,

I'll take Brian's advice and see if the hose replacement does the trick. Hopefully I can find the correct inner diameter with a clear tube so as to check for oil leaking from shut off valve.

so, guys, now that this issue is solved, what if the car doesn't shut down, except when i put a golf pin in one of the two rubber tubes that sends vacuum lines through the firewall and into the cabin? until i put that golf pin in the tube to block it off, i would have to pop the hood and press the off button to shut it down.

That means you have a vac leak in the lock system, quite common.

so, would that be one of the vacuum actuators in each of the doors except the driver's door, or the fuel door actuator, or trunk lock? what's the most common one that causes the leak

^ Yes, or a failed connector, don't know, you'll have to check 'em all.

Now it won't shut off at all. . .

unless I use the stop button. I tried Brian's suggestion, but that didn't help. I don't have a mini vac, so I tried sucking on a tube connected to the shut off valve and it slowed the engine down but didn't turn it off. I have an extra valve which I swapped onto the injection pump, but that didn't help. I checked the connection on the back of the ignition tumbler and it's tight. I also tested both of my shut off valves off of the injection pump and they seem to be moving pretty well. How can I test the vacuum switch on the back of the ignition tumbler? Is it possible that both of the shut off valves I have on hand are too weak to operate in the injection pump? Once again, I have disabled the locking system. This has nothing to do with a leak in the locking system. Thanks

What vacuum are you getting from the pump?

Get a Mighty Vac. It's a great investment working on Mercedes.

If you can't shut it down with three hard sucks on the line going directly to the shut off valve on the back of the IP, I think chances are, the shut off diaphragm is bad. You'll have to pull a vacuum on the diaphragm with a Mity Vac and see if it holds.
