Changed fuel filters - car wont start

I cant win. I just got heat working. I did a diesel purge, which went fine.
I changed the pre filter and the spin on, I did use the same rubber gasket on the spin on again, since I didnt have a new one...the car started up...and then stalled out. Now I cant get it to start. Bad filters? Does the banjo bolt on the spin on filter need to be pointed in a specific direction?

Did you prime it with the hand-primer? If not give it like 50-100 pumps until you heard the pressure relief valve inside the IP buzzing on every stroke, then restart it.

I'm not an expert, as many of this forum are...but I believe you have to prime the system after changing filters - Slightly losen the large nut/bolt on top of the spin on housing and then use the hand primer on the IP...pump until small amount of fuel comes out around the losened nut/bolt then tighten it...I think the car should start, but may run rough a little until air is out of system...

Hope I'm right...?

You should hear a "zzztt" "zzzzt" noise from the Injection Pump once you reach prime. It takes a lot of pumping if you did not fill the spin on filter with fuel before hand.

Did you fill the new secondary filter with some kind of combustible liquid like diesel fuel or ATF? If not, you should remove it and do so.

Was there a second rubber gasket on the filter? a small one along the inner edge? My first filter change I didn't notice that gasket there and I had the same problem. I spent an hour making sure I had all of the air out of the fuel system and then finally pulled the filter and compared it to the old one. Old one had no "second' gasket but the new one did. Pulled the gasket off, reinstalled the filter and it started right up.

You've got a manual pump. I just have to cycle the starter switch a bunch of times in my 92 (OM602). No pump.

Do that until you get fuel coming out from the spin-on filter. If that doesn't work, then tighten the spin-on filter and crack the injectors. Re-tighten each injector as you see fuel gushing out of them. Hope that works

More pumping, took the filter off and put it back on...more pumping...LOTS of cranking the starter, LOTS....and she finally came to life.
Now onto an oil change, I'm sure I'll break something in the process

Thanks guys !!!

Wouldn't be a DIY project without breaking something!

Good luck.

If your hand primer is the old style one that you have to screw down then it might be weak/leaking and you should upgrade to the new black style.

You've found out the hard way to fill the spin on filter with fuel, when I do, no need to prime at all, starts right up.
