Ticking

My motor makes a ticking noise. It might be normal, but I wouldn't know being that this is the first MB diesel I have ever owned, so perhaps the noise is normal. It sounds like its coming from the area of the vacuum pump. It stays in time with the motor, and It doesn't seem to go away with the increase of temperature. Its not loud, just kind of blends in with the deisel noise. The motor runs fine too. Again, this could be normal, but I don't know for sure.

My last vehicle, a 2001 f150, died as a result of a spun bearing. While I don't think this is the issue on my MB, I want to prevent it from that ever happening again to any of my cars.

Mine don't tick at vacuum pump when I just stand there. Did you look for a bomb?

That was a joke, sorry.

If you hear a vacuum pump noise (tick) I'd look into it but I never heard a vacuum pump tick, but I don't get too close to it.

Vacuum pumps do wear out. Yours can be rebuilt I think - original miles on the pump?

No clue, but I am going to assume its all original miles. I can't say its actually the vacuum pump, but the sound is coming from that area. I'll make a video of it, but i doubt the the audio will really be good enough to hear.

I have a ticking sound too that I notice at idle, usually after hard acceleration, such as climbing a steep hill. I still don't know what it is...thought it might be a injector or valve, but actually the vacuum pump thing makes sense too. What do these vacuum pumps do when they start to go bad?

Katja, there are two kits for your car - can't hurt to investigate especially in high mileage scenarios. Whatever the case a mechanic's stethoscope is helpful in situations where you can't figure the noise out. Worn valves, injectors, or more serious issues can be better pinpointed via sound.

Oky, I think the ticking noise is coming from one of the units that is mounted on the driver's sde wheel well in the engine compartment. I don't have any photos up yet, but i think there are two units with either vacuums or wires. SOrry I'll get a pic up later. But anyone have an idea of what these things are and are they caable of creating tis "ticking". It only happens at 10k rpm and above, but stops when its gets around 30 or 40 rpm.
