I'm about to cuss my cruise control amp on my '85 300D

Ok... I know there are several threads on this subject already, but none of then really answer the question I need answered.

I'm trying to get the cruise amp out of the car, but I can't freaking figure out where these elusive 10mm bolts that everybody says to take out are. I know not to even bother trying to take out the 2 phillips head screws, and just to take the whole bracket off with the bolts. So I must be a retard because I can't find where these 2 bolts are for the life of me, and my patience is running incredibly thin on this.

SO..... Can someone give a detailed description of exactly where they are, and any other tips on how not to completely come unwound after crouching upside down on your head for 30 minutes with no success? Thanks!

umm, 1985's don't have cruise amps. They work off the egr computer.

What symtoms are you having?

mbinnashville 09-28-2009 06:11 PM

Yeah, '85s do too have cruise amps. I know they do because 1. I see it down there, and 2. You can buy replacements for it. The switch you are talking about must have happened in '86 with the body change.

79Mercy 09-28-2009 06:30 PM

nope, 1985's don't have a amp under the drivers side underdash panel. The 1985's didn't have a tach either.

All of that is controlled via the EGR computer behind the passenger side kick panel.

I have to say I'm not quite sure what you're talking about either 79mercy. Although the tach is indeed controlled by the egr comp.

mbinnashville 09-28-2009 06:49 PM

Yes, with all due respect I don't think he knows what he's talking about. Because my '85 DOES have a tach as well as a cruise amp. Either that or my Benz was made on Mars, and I'm blind and also completely stupid. (Which I still just might be the latter)

So anybody that knows anything about the cruise amp on the '85 want to chime in here?

79Mercy 09-28-2009 06:52 PM

If im wrong I can take that, but something in my mind tells me there is no amp. Let me search around a bit.

But im positive your 85 300D doesn't have a tach AMP.

mbinnashville 09-28-2009 06:58 PM

Well please don't think I wanna be a jerk and argue either because I really don't. So whoever ends up being wrong here, we're cool.

I just know my car has a tach because I look at it every single day.

I know it also has a cruise amp because it was right in front of my face an hour ago. Also the fact that you can buy a Cruise Amp for an '85 300D at any place that sells MB parts. There wouldn't be a replacement for something that didn't exist....

79Mercy 09-28-2009 07:04 PM

I don't wanna be a jerk either. I searched around and it seems as though you are correct. I could have sworn that MB got rid of that cruise amp at the same time they did the tach AMP.

I know you have a tach, but you do not have a tach amp that earlier models had, your tach runs off the EGR computer.

There is a 10mm bolt you need to remove, then you can slide it to the left a bit and remove it.

Craig 09-28-2009 07:06 PM

He's saying the tach does not have an amp under the hood like the 82-84 cars. I'm not sure about the CC amp on the 85.

mbinnashville 09-28-2009 07:07 PM

Sweet. Do you happen to know exactly where the 10mm bolt(s) is? That's what I was getting so ticked at, was not finding the freaking bolt lol.

Oh and yes I know it doesn't have a tach amp. I thought you were saying it had no tach period.

79Mercy 09-28-2009 08:10 PM

The bolt is to the right of the amp and tucked way up in the dash, thats really all there is to tell. Its gold in color.

mbinnashville 09-28-2009 09:24 PM

Ok so the bolt is mounted like up like towards the direction of the roof of the car? (for lack of a better way to describe it lol)

Because I did see one bolt if you are looking straight on at the amp towards the front of the car that is up above slightly and to the right of the amp. It looked like it might be the one holding the bracket on but I wasn't sure.

Get under the dash on your back --- it helps to have the driver's seat all the way back....or OUT.....but you need to be on your back and look straight UP between the steering "column" and the driver's side exterior. I have found that a +2.00 pair of glasses help but the focal length is not quite right for the distance from the floor up to the bolt. Having a small ratchet and about a 10-14inch extension on the socket also helps.

I usually unplug the CC amp and then unbolt it.
