Neutral Safety Switch-Getting read to do it '82 300SD

Hello,

http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/product.asp?pf%5Fid=MS%2D1125&dept%5Fid=6459

I was under the car yesterday looking around on how to remove the switch.
(Above is the switch)

From what I read and have been told the White part in the picture (collar) has to be turned 1/4 turn after a tab is Clicked before removing the plug.

Ive been under the car and as you know there is not allot of room.

Questions:

1. Does the pic show the collar in the locked position or the unlocked position?

2.I assume the Thumb part is the Tab I have to release, to unlock the collar lock to I PUSH or PULL the thumb TAB?

3. Once Thumb Tab is released is the collar turned CW or CCW to unlock the Plug?

I've read the other links but I'm not clear yet. Thanks.

The picture above is from a site I don't plan on ordering the switch from, just a reference.

Working or order to purchase from Phil/Roy. Phil filled order yesterday but waiting on him to call me for my Credit Card info.

Just don't want to piss Roy off since he was helpful yesterday with me on the phone.

Steve

This is from another forum but has pics. However, I think it is from a 123.

Diesel 911, thanks for the link. Going there now. Got my NSS from Phil and Roy yesterday. Has Mercedes stamped on it, really good quality it appears.

Not looking forward to doing this job but Roy says not difficult at all.

I got NSS today from Phil and installed it.

My '82 300SD took a W0133-1617217 for the transmission I have. Roy looked up the VIN and gave me the correct part number. The part I got from Phil had Mercedes stamped on it, so OEM. There are 2 styles of switches for my year model car.

My trannie was a .3 trannie. There is a .4 trannie.

1.The white plug locking collar has to be turned 1/4 turn CW to unlock the plug then gently pry out plug in a wobble fashion. This is the white collar behind the Plug. Just turn it CW it will turn, no need to release any sort of tab, well atleast not with me there wasn't. There is like a Thumb Landing you can push "up" on on the fwd side of the plug outer diameter. It's a weird design. Just go slow. It's behind the plug and originally white.

2. I ordered new Clips WO133-1643612. They are different and better than the old style IMHO. More on that later.

3. I ordered and installed new Bushings.

4. When installing the bushing on the Front end of rod it's easy to see the rod needs to be removed to do this easier . I used a C-clamp and a socket and a washer. Easy and straight forward.

5. I also learned the new style clips or more designed as a push-on style where U don't have to spread them apart as much to get them started like the old ones. An improvement.

6. I also installed the "Fwd clip" with the new bushing with the Rod "removed". The rod and 3 inch lever with the clip attached fishes back with plenty of room and way easier this way. I would not try to install new style clip with shift lever attached to output shaft. That output shaft looks like trouble to me.

7. The rear bushing was a dog to install. I used a short bolt, washer, socket and nut.

8. I left the (2) switch 10mm headed screws for NSS just snug in case I had to adjust later on.

9. After Rod installed checked to make sure Rear lites came on in Reverse. OK

10. Went back under and tightened up the 10MM headed bolts for NSS that were left a tad loose.

11. The switch has slight adjustment but just a few degress. The back up lites were on in Reverse for all slight adjustments of the NNS, so I just set it in the middle.

12. The old switch appears a bit used up without a good snapping action and it does feel Sloppie/Crunchie inside.

They say they can be rebuilt but for $60 for the OEM swith I'd prefer new switch.

Took me a few hours but I usually don't hurry it much it was so nice out today!

Hope this helps

When thinking of the white plug lock collar think Opposite of what is normal.

ie CW is to loosen and CCW is to tighten.
