Pulling the intake manifold

Last weekend I pulled the intake and cleaned it up. there was a ton of oil and gunk all over. Then I replaced the EGR with a block off plate and wow there was a ton soot and nasty in the valve and the hole on the intake manifold. Then I cleaned the bolt on the back that feeds the alda and that was 80% or more clogged with more gunk. Now I want to just pull the whole intake manifold and clean it up. I can only imagine what it looks like in there!! Any thing special I need? Any parts I should replace when I pull it? (gaskets, seals etc...) any pointers?

You'll need a manifold gasket.

Interesting...

Two quesitons: I've been wanting to do the intake manifold cleanup too, so what would you clean it with, anyway?!

Also, I see many are removing the EGR valve and replacing it with a metal plate on top of the intake manifold - I often wonder what is done with the other hole where the perforated pipe comes out of - what do you plug that hole with?

I was going to use brake cleaner and or purple power. The top of the intake is dirty and I can only imagine what is inside after seeing the crap in the EGR.

The EGR kit I bought from Brian Carlton. It has a nice cut plate to block off the intake with a new gasket and the other side of the EGR on the exhaust manifold has a copper plate that you form to fit the spot on the manifold and then you clamp it inplace with the old clamp. EGRs SUCK!!! so how in the world is it good to send burnt exhaust back into your intake?!?! I just dont get why they do that. If my 7.3 had one, it would also be blocked! thankfully my 7.3 has no emmisions on it at all other then the splitshot injectors that will be replaced with some larger singles if and when they die

How difficult was it to remove the intake/exhaust manifolds on yours? Did you have to remove the Turbo beforehand? Looking at mine the turbo bolts are a little rusty and they look like they have been baked on there... wondering how easy/difficult they come off.

You probably going to have to take out the exhaust manifold too because the gasket is for both intake and exhaust. If your doing that it's a good time to install pyro gauge.

Dont know yet. I need to order a gasket and a few other parts before I am going to take it off. My return oil line from the turbo is leaking so I will be pulling the turbo for sure to replace the gasket and orings there.

You can buy a gasket kit that includes the seal for the oil return line. I forgot who makes it but cost was around $60. I shopped on line & NAPA got close on matching price. I'm working from memory but think it included everything needed to get down to the manifold ie intake/exhaust gasket, turbo/manifold etc. Confirm with diagram so you don't end up missing some little piece.
