OM603 Turbo Troubles
Hello,
I started a new thread after my "Knock Knock" adventure of rebuilding my OM603 for the third time in two years! The engine has been running well and has been running normally aspirated. I hooked up the turbo and no joy. My turbo is recently rebuilt unit and is not working! The turbo is spinning freely. There is no movement of the control rod and I am applying 25HG of vacuum to the actuator unit using a hand pump. Anyone know of a site with a free manual for the Garrett T3 turbo? HELP! |

I thought the 603 had a pressure actuated wastegate...

Thats news to me!
That is news to me! I assumed that it is vacuum actuated as are the door locks etc on the car.
I am not finding any info in my electronic manual for this gadget. Ed |

Pressure actuated, should be fully open at 11.4psi IIRC.

No Go
I blasted it with 90 PSI with the rod disconnected and it would not budge.
Houston.........we have a problem. Thanks Jeff. By the way, what is IIRC? Ed |

If I Remember Correctly.
This is in an '86/'87? In these (the OM603.960 and OM603.961) the wastegate is pressure-actuated, also I believe (or IIRC if you prefer) that the '90/'91 603.970 (350SD/SDL) is pressure-actuated. If you have a '92-up (W140 body) then I don't know, seems that I've read that it is vacuum-actuated. You should be putting 10-15psi into the little hose connection on the actuator right? That should move the rod and the wastegate flap. Oh, I like your location, cool.

Progress
Well I managed to get it to move. I sprayed WD40 into it and let it sit. I applied 90PSI to it and it moved! It is moving freely now! But it still seems to need a lot more than 10-15 PSI to make it move.
Where can I find some references for this turbo? Is it possible to have the wrong waste gate control valve? Ugh! Ed |
