Smack 95 e300d dash and fix temp gauge

235,000 on the 95. Temp gauge been jumping up and down lately. Moderate smack on the dash often settles it back to where it belongs. Is this an indicator of a bad gauge, sending unit or ground? Possible fixes?

Exact same problem on mine. Looking forward to seeing responses.

If smacking the dash fixes it, it's not the sending unit.

Likely a connection in the cluster, such as one of the screws grounding the panels together or even inside of the gauge.

Cluster comes out easily enough. Is the temp gauge replaceable once I have the cluster out?

My temp gauge sticks until the car warms up and the interior temperature comes up to some point. Been doing that for years. It sticks against the lower stop. A whack on the dash will unstick it, but usually I just let it come up on its own. Once unstuck it is steady, however. So this is a pretty useless post....sorry!
