'83 240D A/C condensate drain location?

Hi All,

Anyone know the location of the A/C condensate drain on the '83 240D?

The reason I ask is because I currently have the bellhousing removed while I replace the clutch. On the underbody of the car, right above where the bellhousing fits in, there is a hole in the metal lining. The hole was half filled with some sort of deteriorated stuff so, of course, I poked around at it. Up inside there is some insulation , but also a platic tube up in there - it doesn't come the whole way down, but I am wondering if there was rubber drain hose attached to it - as a drain - and I can only imagine that it would be for the AC. Is this correct? If not, what am I looking at? If necessary, I'll take a picture tonight.

Thanks.

You are sniffing on the right trail. that is where it drains.

MB used a foam tube with a wire spring wrapped inside it, and wrapped on the out side with a white plastic if I remember right.
They usually deteriorate and get mushy and leak after 15 - 20 yrs. mine did and I had water in the R/R pass foot well. carper soaked until I figured what was going on. ( pre MBShop Forum Days)

Remove the carpet on the Pass side so you can see under the A/C. You will see the mushie foam tube mess.

there are a lot of write up using the cut off top of a coke bottle and fitting it in there, with the threaded part in the hump.
I think it was JIMMYL that did it and had pictures.

I used a piece of hose, but expect to loose a pound of flesh in the process. not a lot of room.

Here is one from a month back

Thanks Charlie!

Okay, that confirms what I thought. Here is the link to JimmyL's post:
I've sprung a leak, evaporator drain hose...

And here is a picture he posted:

The black drain pipe that is draining into the cut-off pop (or soda depending on where you live) bottle, appears to be what I am seeing as I look up through the hole. Given what a pain everyone says this is to access, I am going to try and deal with this from the bottom. Try and find an appropriate size hose and stick it on from the bottom.

So the original drained right on top of the tranny then?

Yeah the cold water keeps the tranny cool .

I listed a thread# in my previous post.

So you did, thanks again.

I think I'll grab some 5/8 and 3/4 tubing and see what works. Maybe seal around it where it comes out into the tranny tunnel with some expandable spray-on insulation foam.

It's an odd shape piece and a new one from MB is less than $10.

Recycled

for new members.

These foam hoses deteriorate, and become plugged or leak into the passenger compartment.

I suggest replacing them with modern rubber or plastic hose.
