Best motor oil to use in my 240d
 

Oil Change time and I would like to know what motor oil weight and type I should be using in my 1983 240D.

Consider that we will be going into the winter months and the weather will be getting colder.

The vehicle is garaged in the the northeastern part of the USA.

CD diesel rated HDEO like Delo 400, Delvac Super/MX or Rotella. Check BITOG for oil analysis done on MB diesels and you will find out how all oils hold up in the engine.

From what I've read...just about any diesel rated 5w40 synthetic or 15w40 dino is just fine for an older diesel. Synthetic may be preferable for cranking in cold weather.

The only other thing about oil is..."change it hot and often" :cool:

I use Mobile 1 5W40 (a little hard to find and a little more expensive) or Rotella "synthetic" 5W40 (cheaper and usually available at walmart). The advantage of 5W40 synthetic over 15W40 coventional oil is easier cold starting. Beyond that, any diesel oil with the correct range will work.

Redline 15W40. I change mine once per year. Redline recommends changing it every 10,000 - 16,000 miles or once per year.

I was pointed to the rotella-t 15W-30 (or 40? I forget) comes in the gallon jugs with the picture of a big rig on the back. Also told 3,000 miles or 6 months for that. Synthetic will help you crank in the winter and can go for more miles, but not more time (from what I've heard). I only drive 3-6,00 miles a year anyway, so I stick with the conventional oil.

Can some one explain to me why Synthetic will crank( help to crank ) better in the winter or in cold climate? Would the viscosity differs so much for synthetic and dino at low temp? All in the mind?

I like oill/ATF/PS fluid/Brake fluid thread as you have so many recommendations that you are spoiled with choices.:confused::confused:. Any members against buying it in Walmart?

Changing it often is best.

5W-40 vs 15W-40. It has better cold weather flowability.

Make sure its New, Clean and proper grade (diesel rated) for your vehicle. Diesel oils are rated beginning with a C not S.

The best oil to use is the C-rated oil that you change hot every 3000 miles.

It really doesn't matter after that. Yes, 0W-40 is more suitable for colder climates, but 15W-40 should be fine for anywhere in the continental United States.

guys what about DELO? That's what I normally put in because the Rotella is like $20 a gallon..

I had to go with Castrol Diesel Oil -_- I needed oil and didn't have enough money... It was $3.99...

But any who, Delo a good oil to use?
