First of all I'm cheap. I had 1 go bad. So I replaced that only one. It was a Bosch that I replaced with a Bosch. So far so good.

I needed a quick fix so I went to NAPA... uh oh, Autolite. It has been a few weeks and so far so good. Quick starts on cool mornings. I guess I will wait to find out how bad they are.

Order the "Real" ones from Phil . . . I had mine in TWO (2) days! That way when yours die, which they will, you will have the proper plugs to put in . . . just a thought . . . although a good one!

I had 2 of the Autolite Glow Plug tips swell to the point that they were difficult to remove from the Cylinder Head.
And, after only 6 months use here in Sunny CA.

Any place that is cold is even going to be harder on them.

Because the Winters here are so mild I was not worried about them burning out and not working in a short period of time; but, having trouble getting the 2 out because of the swollen tips scared me.
I do not like the idea of having to retrieve a tip out of the Prechamber or some of the other adventures people have had with stuck Glow Plugs.

Anyway I pulled all of the Autolites out of my Engine. So I have the old ones that still work and several New Autolites that I guess are for extremem emergency use only.

For my '83 300D I've heard of the typical Bosch 80006 glow plugs (Bosch p/n 0-250-201-039 (35T)) but I've also heard of the Duraterm glow plugs. What's the difference between these?

Do the Duraterms require a different relay? I've been searching but came out more confused thanks.

Real people with real GP failures & not a multi-meter in sight !!

My guess is that the ones with a short in the body & no heat at the tip would have been about right on a resistance test. Thats what I found in the past.

Pull them out & test them when you do your valve adjustment. It makes turning the motor over easy for the valve adjustment. Do it a month before the cold sets in.
Nice glowing plugs like Christmas tree lights !!

I normally go for bosch but after reading here will consider Beru. I would not hesitate to substitute NKG in a pinch though as I have always found them to be good for spark plugs.

As I recall reading somewhere, the Bosch Duraterm's have 2 heating elements in series to greatly reduce the likelyhood of coil burnout by throttling down current consumption if the glow plugs are left on for an extended period of time.

props to bosch duraterms. i had all kinds of starting issues in my '82 300d a couple years ago with new monarks. on a $100 whim, i decided to try the duraterms. my '82 now starts like a new car, even in 0˚F weather. only the tips on the duraterms get hot, which is what you want, so all the sizzle is right there in the prechamber where you want it.
