1985 126- do i likely have ATE or Bendix rear calipers

i need to make a trip to fix the car. I was told the rear brakes are grinding, one pad is down to metal, so I ordered new pads and rotors, but i was told that one caliper may need to be replaced as well.

I know calipers need to be replaced in pairs, and really hope i don't have to replace either of them, but in case I do, I'd like to be prepared. Do I likely have ATE or bendix on that car? I've had them unmounted once before when I changed the rear sway bar end links but don't have the car nearby me yet.

that's easy. just crawl under the car and look for the Ate or bendix logo on the caliper. It should be easily identifiable. You don't have to remove the wheel.

also, it is ok to just replace one caliper if the other side is still ok.

Check the pad retention clips, thin bent wire, Bendix, thick two piece cross, ATE.

Hogwash. Mixing caliper brands on the same axle is not fine at all. Different brands often have different size pistons.

And, in some cases, having different calipers would require that you buy two sets of brake pads. How smart would that be?

Where can I get the spring retention clips for ATE pads? I would like to replace mine since one of them the rivet has come off and the others are pretty funky.

If the concern was replacing existing calipers with the same brand, that would not be necessary. Either ATE or Bendix will work, but the generally accepted advice is to keep the same brand on a given 'axle' or end of the car. I have personally never seen a set of Bendix units, as all of our 123's and 220D's have all had ATE calipers. Rebuilt ATE's from O'Reilly's have proven to be quite reasonably priced and reliable.

My dad's SD has had a bendix caliper on the left and ATE on the right (in the rear) since he bought the car years and 55k ago...no issues at all...pads wear the same.

Obviously it is not "ideal" but it will very likely cause 0 issues.
