seat removal problem
85 300d,i began removing 10mm bolts in rear of seat rails,first came out with no problem,the other one had rounded stripped head-what to do to get it out,i havent had any experience with drilling and tapping etc.

You could try using one of these-
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96335 Then when you get the old bolt out, just put a new bolt back in.

IIRC, they are 6mm screws.
If the head is stripped, vice grips will likely budge those screws........they aren't very strong. |

You can always hammer a smaller sized socket over it.

Google "bolt extractor" and go to your local hardware store and purchase a set. The concept is a reverse threaded tap. You drill a hole in the top of the bolt and then screw in the extractor. Since it is reverse threaded it is putting pressure on the bolt in the "unscrew" direction.
Use some penetrating oil on the bolt and let sit overnight. And use drilling oil on the bolt head when drilling for the extractor. |

so i just got a bolt extractor kit from sears 19 dollars and will try tonite,yes they are 10mm and vice grip will not fit in there,i am wondering where i get new bolt and what size thread it is.ill update progress.thanks for your ideas.

Also a Dremel dril to cut the bolt head off-or cut a "groove" down the center of the bolt head and use a flathead screwdriver to get bolt out.

If it isn't completely rounded off, I have had some luck with a 3/8" six point impact grade socket. Got most of the manifold bolts out of a 17 year old van that way.

thanks for all the info,got bolt extractor kit ,came home last night and hammered on socket,took some muscle and pressure but bolt came out-yeah!!.where do i get new ones or will hardware have them,??

It is a great forum. I bought my car 3 years ago having done nothing more than having changed oil on a car...last year I replaced the engine and transmission BY MYSELF. Of course I couldn't have done it without the confidence and knowledge I gained from this forum.

Be careful using those. They can break then you have gone from having a mess to a helluvuhmess as they are hardened. Pick up a thread gauge when you have a chance. They're cheap & handy for knowing what thread pitch you have. Calipers or even an open end wrench measure bolt size.
