Oh, one more thing. When it wouldn't shift I pulled into a gas station and checked the fluid and it was bubbly and about 3/4" above the full mark. The mechanic said that won't make it not shift.

OK, back to the trans issue. I need to fix it tomorrow for a 100 mile round trup to work on Monday.

I finally brought the car home today. Shifting seemed OK, but the 3 to 4 shift felt a bit funny. At a stop light, I gunned it and from then on, problems!

The car won't shift out of 1st until redline where it will go into 2nd and then quickly into 3rd. I can't seem to get it to go into 4th.

While I'm in 3rd, I can move the gear selector to 'S' and nothing seem to happen. No shifting into 2nd.

I think it must be an adjustment or a vacuum leak somewhere.

Please help!

Craig

Another piece for the puzzle.

Tonight after feeling totally pissed off that the car won't shift this afternoon, and searching the forum for an answer, I decided to take it to the market a few blocks away.

I got in the car, wiggled the kickdown wires, pushed in the switch a few times and now it works fine.

It seems that the switch can become stuck, although mine didn't feel stuck. We'll see tomorrow.

Does anyone know where the kickdown solenoid is? It was mentioned on the forum, but nobody said where it was.

Thanks,

Craig

trans shift

I will post more details later, but if you want a quick fix, then try and isolate the engine bay vacuum system from the central locking system - this is usually done by blocking off the 2 pipes that lead from the one way valve near the brake booster that go into the passenger cell through the bulkhead. [block them by putting golf tees into end of rubber pipes] This is because most vacuum problems are in the central locking system. Run for about a mile to see if this restores normal shifting. BTW, does your engine run on after switching off?

The engine did run on, but only 1 time.

Today while detailing it I found a blue vacuum hose with a black rubber hose on the end, under the passenger seat, that wasn't connected to anything. I have a coupe, so the seat vacuum locks the seat while driving.

I looked under the seat for the connection. All I saw was a 'T' blue vacuum fitting with one end open. I thought that must be the connection, but the lose fitting I found had rubber tubing on it. Rubber can't go to rubber.

I took off the rubber on the lose connection and connected them together. Maybe there was a small piece of blue vacuum hose that went in between?

I'm about to go to the store, so we'll see.

Thanks,

Craig

Well the loose hose didn't do anything, in fact, I now have total engine run on to the point where I needed to open the hood and use the switch by the valve cover.

I also have no central locking. I know I have some bad hoses in the engine compartment, but I think the problem is bigger than that.

Also, does anyone remember where the clear hose goes to from the top of the switchover valve (turbo over boost valve) behind the vacuum pump? Mine is broken. I have it coming off the top of the valve. I also have a piece coming from the bottom. I guess it broke, I just don't remember it making a loop from the top of the switch to the bottom.

UPDATE:

It turns out that the vacuum leak was due to a hose that I knocked off.

The trans not shifting was due to the kickdown switch being stuck in the down position all the time. A $10 switch fixed it.

Thanks everyone.

So what was the bottom dollar? Did that switch being bad save you a few bucks in the long run?

Yeah. The switch was the easy part to figure out. The vacuum leak was a headache.

I remembered that the door locks worked the day I bought the car. Now 2 days later, they don't. I knew it had to be something that I did. So I went back to the engine and looked very carefully and I found the line I knocked off. Good thing I found it because I was about to take it to my indie mechanic.
