Injector Interchangability

I ordered a set of 5 remanufactured injectors for my 1983 300D. Last night I installed this set along with all new heat shields. Four of the injectors work very well, but the 5th one (nearest the radiator) has a significant leak from the body of the injector.

I took it back off and attempted to retorque the body of the injector, but couldn't get it to tighten any more.

I was planning on going on a 1000 mile trip next week, but I can't go with a leaky injector, and I don't know how long it's going to take to get one back from the folks I bought the set from. In the meantime, are there any potential problems with putting one of my old injectors (don't leak) back in there while I wait for the new one (provided I use a new heat shield). The old injectors seemed to work OK, but they did need replaced.

Thanks,

Joe

So I am checking around here, and the only place I can find a heat shield (haven't looked at the dealers yet) is at an auto parts place that sells a "beck arnley" one....is it ok to interchange different types of heat shields?

I have heat shields for my 95 e300d on hand in Woodbridge, VA. If you can determine that my heat shields will work for you, you can have one of mine. Just replace it when you get back from your trip. Mark

Thanks, Mark!

I actually am going to stop at American Service Center on the way home from work. They have 4 on hand and I'm buying all of them.

NAPA may also sell the Injector Heat Shields.

I drove about a year on the Old Heat Shields on my Volvo Diesel (it uses the same Heat Shields) with no problem. The reaon is at the time I did not know that they needed to be changed when you replace the Injectors.

If you buy them online a head of time they can cost as low as $1.10 each along with your order of other stuff you need like Filters and ect.

I have a handful of genuine mercedes heat shields. I'm in Arlington. These are for the OM606 motor, so may or may not be what you need. Verify that it is correct (it probably is) and you can have mine for free.

The ones I got at American Service Center work perfectly. I put one of my old injectors in place of the leaky one....not the final solution, but good enough.

Leakage between the nozzle body halves is common and is caused by dirty or rough sealing surfaces. You can disassemble the injector body by placing the upper half in a bench vise upside down. The proper way to ensure a good seal is to lap the surfaces with fine sandpaper on a piece of glass. Start with 600 grit and finish with 1200. Lap both sides of the intermediate disk and the face of the top half. This process will remove some metal which can change opening pressure, so remove as little as possible. Keep everything as clean as possible when reassembling and coat all parts with clean engine oil. In fact simply cleaning and reassembling the injector halves will often fix a leak. Remember to torque injector halves to 52-59 ft-lbs.
