Transmission
I have a 1987 mercedes benz 300 turbo diesel wagon with a 6 cylinder. I need to replace the transmission. I need to know what years and what model and engines will direct fit.
Someone told me I could put a 5 speed in the '87 benz (above car) - were they talking about an automatic? Is it an easy swap? Any information on either of these questions would be a big help. Thanks Benzq |

Seems to me you don't replace old transmissions, you rebuild them.

For an exact match, the '87 300D turbo and '87 300TD turbo (wagon).
However, many of the same transmission were made for other models with some differences. AFAIK all of the 124 body cars have the same basic transmission, with the significant difference being: Gear ratios, but all 4th (top) gears are 1:1 TC Stall speed, diesels are typically lower stall speed Shifting RPM 1st-gear-start (the 300E starts in 2nd gear unless you floor it or manually downshift). The only 5-speed that will fit your car without electronics is a manual transmission, for which you will need a donor car (pedals, driveshaft, linkages, etc., etc.). The S-Class 126 diesel cars have the same basic transmission also with the above differences plus an electronic speedometer pickup in the tailpiece vs your cable-drive speedo (tailpiece would need to be swapped).

transmission
Babymog and NY300SD,
I am going to replace the transmission in my '87 diesel wagon 6 cylinder. Do the 5 cylinder and 6 cylinders diesel engins use the same transmission? If so which years can I use? |
