1982 300Sd Some guy painted his name on my car?? "Pierre"
This is not really a problem but more of a discovery.
On the back of the drunk lid at 5'Clock under the words "Turbo Diesel" there is a real tiny signature in yellow and it says "Pierre". My car was signed at the factory?? There is no way I doubt somebody could sign his name this small but it looks real. No way I could. Were these cars signed when they were painted at the factory? I think my paint is original the way it looks. Sort of cool too. Wonder what Piere is doing now a days? Thanks for anything you may know about this. Steve |
Is your car pinstriped? It might be his signature, those guys can write pretty small.
|
Thanks Craig,
I believe you figured it out! I did not know this was done on cars at the factory at Mercedes. Maybe mine was painted in France? Joking. If I had to do it they would have to repaint the car! Man it is so TINY, oops tiny. Seems like original owner got all the Bling. Chrome over the wheel wells, etc. That explains it. Been wondering a few years now. Steve |
If a German signed it I'd adopt his name for my car as allot of you have done but Pierre seems a bit wrong for a German car.
What do you guys think? " Pierre' for a Benz? |
My 240D has a pinstripe with a little logo painted at the back. I suspect the dealer or the owner had it done after the car was delivered.
|
So after-market. Gotcha.
I still like it. |
MAybe a "dealer option"? I'm just guessing.
|
LOL!!
I wonder it that was "our Pierre"? A Mercedes tech here in Central FL. He might have had his hands on that car at some point in time? |
^^LOL. He would NEVER write on a Mercedes.

Anybody have any pictures of these tiny signatures? Not that I don't believe you guys....
On a related but completely different note, our 79 300D says "Mr Wells" in printed letters on the outer edge of the driver's door. We've been trying to figure out for the last two years why it says "Mr Wells". We have very limited records (and most of the records we do have are in Greek, actually) so don't know if Mr Wells was the name of a previous owner, or perhaps the name of the car. My theory is that Mr Wells was the previous owner, and he belonged to a pretentious country club with valet parking. In order to make the valet service seem particularly sharp, the valet would stick the name of the owner on the driver's side door, so that as they helped the owner out of the car they could greet them by name without having to memorize all of the members. My wife thinks that theory is ridiculous. |
There is a signature, I guess, under the TURBO DIESEL, I'll take a pic when its light again.

I can take a picture of my Pierre signature when it gets sunnie out, raining today.
You'll freak when you see how small it it. I'm near sighted so I see well up close and even I have to look hard to even see it!! Hey if the Florida expert on Mercedes is name Pierre I now have name for my BENZ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Help me out, can't be that hard to learn to post a picture. Steve |
Snookwhaler,
The original ower of this 300SD was infact from Florida. You may have something! Steve |
If a fly landed on Pierre's signature you would not see it.
That's how small it is. You all may have them and not even know it. Look close! |

We're in that same rainstorm as you guys (I'm in North GA). It's unreal. It seems like we've had at least a couple of inches already today and it is showing no signs of letting up. |

This is my first uploaded picture. I did 2.1 meg on my camera. Hope it goes.
|
My camera has 2.1 meg up to 7.0 meg. That last pic went through easily at 2.1 meg and I could have used a highter meg resolution pic .
What do you suggest is best? I'm on dial up. OUCH Options: 5.0 MP 4:3 3.1 MP 4:3 2.2 MP 3:2 2.1 MP 16:9 1.2 MP 4:3 ( What I used to take the last picture) Steve |

Looks like the same sig (different color of course) to me. Is the sig in the same color as the pinstripe? |
Zeke,
The pinstriping and the Signature are different colors but not far off. One is goldish(Pinstripes)and other yellow(Pierrre). I think yellow was chosen as it stands out better from paint color. U know I looked at the other signature and I was sort of thinking the same Signature as you thought but I wasn't sure at all since it was worn some. It did have a similar incline. Maybe it's just some midget with low selfesteem doing grafetti named Pierre! |
No wonder our cars are so broke down and need TLC we are here too much!
Ever think how many hours you wasted here, but it is fun, recess I call it. |
None on mine, but it also never had pinstripes. When I bought it new at Stephenson Mercedes in Dallas, none of the 123's had pinstripes. They would add them for no charge if you wanted them. I opted out. I'd bet that it was the pinstripers signature.
To stir the pot a bit, my window sticker (yes, I still have it) reads 300D-T. So does my metal owners plate, myTexas title and my insurance card |

LNGfish, I use the next to smallest pixel setting, but I have a 7.1 unit, so try larger and larger if you like till you get a "image too large" response when you try to upload, but take dial up into consideration. Also, if your camera has a "macro" setting, use that for close ups. |
TooMany,
I used the Macro or close up setting. I'll bump it up to to next setting on pixels. Interesting 2 color pinstripe. Mine is 2 stripes but same color as yours, same location too across gas tank lid. This guy Pierre must of done dealers cars in NY from pervious post. |

mine says "BUBBA".....i wonder where it was made?
|
My 300d has a small footprint on the end of the declk lid, suspect the artist left his mark after he pinstriped..?
|
Pierre got around, and he has lots of friends
I had hand painted pin-stripes added to my 1975 280. The artist left a discreet signature on the rear fender, where it was hidden from view unless the trunk was open. I can't recall the name for sure, but it was a Spanish name. Hand painted Pin-stripes and whitewall tires were very popular additions to Mercedes in the late 70's early 80's. I did both. :)
I suppose it would seem a bit odd to see a name on your car with no explanation. |

Charles explained where his says 300D-T but I don't believe anybody has actually seen a emblem on a trunk that was that way.:D Besides . . .It is not every day we get to see Michelangelo's signature!:P |
