Question 300SD Seized/Transmission Removal

Hello, I am new to the world of the Mercedes diesel but not new to Mercedes by any means. I recently purchased a 1982 300SD with a seized motor. I got the car for dirt cheap knowing that the motor may have to be replaced. I'm currently in school to become a diesel mechanic so as far as the engine goes it's familiar territory. I am rebuilding the engine (or another donor engine) for my class project but hit a bit of a snag. In order to remove the bolts on the flex plate and torque converter you need to be able to rotate the engine which obviously if the engine is seized creates a small problem. I've read that other people with gas engines have removed bearing caps and the cylinder head and pushed/pounded the pistons down (with a block of wood and hammer). Has anyone had a similar experience with their OM617 that could maybe point me in the right direction? If I can't rotate the engine will the engine and transmission clear the engine bay as a unit in this car? I pulled the engine out of a 450sl once and there's no room at all to do that, but the W126 obviously has quite a bit more engine room than a 107. Thanks for your time, hopefully I can finish removing the motor tomorrow and find out the internal status by mid this week.

You should be able to rotate the drive shaft to access the flex disc bolts with the tranny in neutral, e-bake off and on wheel off of the ground.

Yes, you can remove the engine and tranny as a unit. You will need to have an engine leveler and hay it set where the end of the tranny points downward. IIRC it's about a 45 degree angle.

You should be able to pull the tranny off the TC with the TC still attached to the flexplate. (you can't however install it that way). Once you pull the engine apart you should be able to unbolt the TC from the flexplate. Are you going to pull the engine and tranny out together as a unit (which you can do)?

I had planned on just pulling the engine and leaving the transmission in place as I thought this would be easier. Have you pulled both of these together before? If so was it relatively easy? Anything I should look out for on this car while doing this?

Put the hood in the straight up vertical position before starting the process. It helps.

For what you are doing, I think removing both together would be easier. If nothing else, getting access to the top two bolts on the bellhousing (or is that not an issue on W126s?).

The big issue is the "angle of the dangle" so to speak. The engine/tranny will only come out at a very steep angle, so you will need to have a rig that can get high enough. Also will have to protect the radiator and rad support when doing this.

You might seek other opinions as I don't have a W126 and you may have enough access area to just pull the engine.

Well I will be pulling the engine and transmission from the car tomorrow. Today was a unbolt and disconnect day. I reviewed the 126 service CD and it cleared a lot up. On a sad note I won't be rebuilding this engine since it has a connecting rod from #5 sticking out of the block. I guess it's off to the junkyard to find a donor engine. At least the shop at my school is available for me and since it is a diesel it fits into my lab time perfectly. Thanks for all your responses. I'll keep you posted as I go. I plan to completely rebuilt the new donor before it goes in, better to start fresh if I have it out already.

I've got a donor car with 164K miles on it if you are interested. Where are you located? If within 3 hours drive of me, delivery could be worked out. Here is the thread:
