1st gear slips bad!!!

After reading a lot of posts i'm still wondering what to do next

1985 300D

2 days ago all of a sudden w/o warning 1st gear started slipping, all other gears inc. reverse work fine. checked level and it was low.
next day decided to do a trans service rather than just add fluid. drained TC, new filter, and 7+qts dex lll

1st still slips badly but slightly different, not the shudder and bang just a smooth slip now from start and 2nd gear shift shudders for a short second 3rd is same and 4th doesn't bang

removed trans vacuum line but no change.

this car shifted like this b4 all this happened

1-2 very firm & fast
2-3 slips a little and slow
3-4 extremely fast almost a bang

also this car has under 60K miles

i'm prayin its something i can fix. you all havent let me down yet!
thanks in advance

Mine does this too. A month ago mine was started doing it and did it for about 50 miles. Then it went away. A week ago it happened and left after a mile. can it be a b2 malfunction?

First base is fluid and filter change, as low fluid will make it slip with sort of a surging motion (check fluid again just to make sure). Second step is probably the B2 piston - did you look up into the transmission to see anything awry? B2 band is right above the valve body and you can see it from the bottom. In your fluid and filter change, did you see any particles or anything out of the ordinary in the pan?

hi thx for the replies

the pan was pristine except for 1 small piece of metal or clutch material, about the size of 2 pin heads

as for the b2 i didnt see anything. i wouldnt now what to look for anyway, i wish i had read more b4 i did the trans service.

does it sound like i have a textbook case of it?

You can always re-use the fluid. I filter through a coffee filter if I think it needs it. As for the B2. Pull the cover and pull the piston. Most likely it is broke as in pieces. If it's not in pieces you can free it up I guess but I would replace it. If it's hung up there must be a reason and it wont fix itself. Good luck. Thanks

There is a great writeup at www.dieselgiant.com. They replace the outer seal, but you follow the same procedure to take the piston out. Just remember you'll need a new seal and plastic bushing when you replace the piston.

Or buy a later used B2 (pull it yourself) at a junkyard for $5.

tonight i finally got everything re-assembled and went for a very short road test.
wow it acts like a different trans. altogether
1-2, 2-3 nice and firm
3-4 i have to wait and see. not enough road, late with heavy rain.

*******IMPORTANT******
anyone doing this repair should buy the seal that holds the plastic bushing in place. #006 997 73 47 . it wasnt clear to me when i read the posts. it cost me 4 bucks, and held me back a day.
i had thought that the seal mentioned was the o-ring seal and if i removed/replaced it, i was in for trouble.

the other thing was that on my 123 i didnt have to remove the header pipe from the engine. diesel giant removed his but his was on a 126 chassis.

thanks to diesel giant for the great write up on this repair, and for pointing out his mistake on the push rod, so i wouldnt mess it up as well.
