Just got one of the prefilters, when I put it in which side is up???

The side with the openings is up, like in the top drawing in this link. Now you will actually have a functioning oil filter in your car, congrats!

I hope more people read this thread and those who are missing the plastic filter replace it! And, you need to clean it well at each oil change (use kerosene or diesel fuel). Without it you are running mostly unfiltered oil in your engine.

OLD thread, new reply =^D

With my 1976 300D on jack stands for an unrelated repair, I found the filter housing quite easy to R/R. I'd rather not try it with the car resting on its wheels though.

Its tough to keep oil from running up your sleeve as you loosen it. The oil filter location in the 123 is the best ever on any car.

I have changed the oil in a 123 in my good clothes on several occasions when I was young and agile.
