Od behavior after oil change 86 SDL
So I was obsessing that I was at the 4k mile mark oil change wise and was going on a several hundred mile trip. so I dropped the car off at a tire service center near the house that I used to put 500.oo worth of rubber on the car a month ago and I usually stand by and keep an eye on things but didnt and bfr I left I said its a deisel and make sure they put rotella in it!.
I usually do the oil change myself cause it makes me crazy the way they always slobber oil around the unit that holds the filter when they R&R. Am starting a business right now and just don't have the time...anyhow,,, Picked it up later and is running like its fuel starved when pulling out! Took the drive anyway thinking ive been doing a lot of short trips and the freeway would blow the dust out! Ran fine on the freeway but still does this hesitation chugging thing when stepping on it from a stand still. Looked at the A/F and it was dirty so I plunked down the 50 bucks and its still the same....MY prefilter on the fuel line looks fine but I think I will swap out the main filter tomorrow. It's never acted this way before and I find it TOO coincidental that this started right after the oil change. I did call them and ask if they put some pisswater pennzy in it and they swear not! They said drop it off and they will take a look and I may do that after a few of you wise ones chime in. as always...all reply's will be GREATLY appreciated. Alan T NOW in NM for 6 months and loving it!

hopefully they just messed up the linkage or disturbed a vacuum connection.
Inspect everything around the oil filter canister and maybe retrace the vacuum lines? |

Besides plain incompetent mechanics out there; there are places that will purposely damage something so that you have to bring the Car back.
My Boss hired a Guy that Instead of removing the Hard Lines on a Chevy (car) Diesel to get the Fuel Injection Pump out he loosened the connections at the IP and proceeded to bend the Fuel Injection Hard Lines 90 degrees so there was room to pull the IP out. Another Mechanic? installed Core/Freeze plugs using Never-Seez as a sealant. Another unstuck an (Chevy Diesel Engine again) by starteing the Engine. The Injector shot out taking the Fuel Injection Hard Line with it and was found on the other side of the fence. Maybe we need on of those polls "is it safe to have worked done on your car by a shop?"

Try fixing it yourself, or assist the shop. Most mechanics have never seen a 603 and are of little value.

That just reminded me of something that happened when I was in "mechanic school" many years ago. A kid brought in his parents newish "'80 something" Escort to do a tune up. Him and his buds put in the spark plugs and cross-threaded one of them but he figured it was "tight enough" Had his buddy fire it up while he was still under the hood checking to make sure it wouldn't leak. POWWW! Plug shot right out of there and just missed his head by an inch. Put a good sized dent in the hood with a puncture. I had a good sized dent in the back of my head as I was working on a car in another bay and I jumped and whacked my head on the hood when I heard that! At any rate, we got a heli-coil lesson while he cleaned his pants

well, I keep looking around under there as Ive spent enough time there to know if somethings been disturbed and the only thing I notice is the wiring harness that passes by the oil filter and has the outer covering worn away is soaked in oil....THE SLOBBERING THING!
I wonder how it would run with 5/30 crap oil in it?...would the turbo bind a little? It's as if i have no boost at start out and it smokes GREY when cold, more than ever! My gut feeling is to figure it out on my own and if its something they did, then I have the ammo to git them good, or at least teach someone This is the stuff that gives me HIVES when moving to a new town. I left the JAG in a shop in ABQ for a month only to learn I've been driving around for years with clogged cats! (ALL 4 OF THEM) These are the challenges that make us motor heads tick I guess!

Look at the vacuum lines, they probably knocked something off and plugged it in somewhere else (wrong).

In the short term, gasser oil isn't going to cause the problems you've described. Now knocking a boost or vacuum line loose somewhere will. That is most likely what happened.

If the engine is "hesitating" off idle, it's simply not getting fuel. The question is why............the shop cannot cause fuel starvation via an oil change. Sorry............not possible. |

if they knocked more than one line loose.. or intentionally disconnected them, then switched them upon install.. is it possible that there could be a small vacuum source to the IP kill switch?? |

Definitely possible..........but, the vehicle probably wouldn't perform at high rpm's as well.

Could bumping the line into the ALDA or breaking it cause a similar scenario???

I have had two opportunity's to drive it since the "INCIDENT" and it hesitates at any speed while sending out a puff of white smoke after it recovers from the hesitation.
Its about an inch of peddle that does it. Like I said in the 1st post, the wingdings soaked the wire harness that goes near the filter housing were the cover is warn away to were the ind. wires inside are exposed. I wonder if something is shorting out in the electronic idle circuit? Not knowing the actual workings of that system makes me poke in the dark! I may take some blue shower electronic wash and try to clean up what I can if someone chimes in to tell me I may be on to something. I am forced to take the thirsty JEEP to Santa Fe today as I really don't want to push the old gal until I figure this out. I DID drop er off at the offending shop and after two days I got "TAKE IT TO A BENS SPECIALIST" LOL.....Cross them of my REFER to list!
