I want to get a sticker for the '87. Can they get those at the dealer, or is it classic center only?

thanks for the catch!!!!

I meant $19,800

Brandon - what do you mean about options for the 300SD? I thought they were pretty standard. My 81 SD as far as I know has everything on it - cruise, AC, stereo radio, moonroof, alloys, etc. and I thought that was the way they all arrived in the US. Do the prices shown "before options" reflect a non-US version which would have been augmented before being sent here?

On my car at least these were options I don't have: heated seats, power rear seats, 4 person seating, rear foot rests, a power rear sunshade, limited slip / auto locking diff, and rear levelling suspension.

On the early SDs I don't know what all was optional. I know in 84 memory seats and ABS were available, but not standard.

My mom's 84 had memory seats. Other than that I can't tell you what options were available. Our dealer in Bellevue Washington ordered about half of them with sunroof and Leather, and some with just a sunroof. Those were both options. Most of the 300SDs I've seen in Utah came with MB-tex. Most 116s and 1981 300SD's I've seen came with MB-tex. AFAIK Cruise, ACC, pwr windows and locks, pwr seats and alloy wheels were standard on US w126 300SD's. Metallic paint was also an extra cost option.

By the late 80's the US$ was strong, prices had stabilized and Mercedes responded by making more items standard. The huge price increases between 1970 and 1988 or so, had as much to do with the strong German Mark, as the US $. In 1970 the exchange rates were aprox. 4DM for $1 US Dollar, but by 1990 a US $ could be had for about 1.6DM.

240D cost, new

In 1974, I paid $7000 for a 240D, ordered and delivered at the factory in Stuttgart. As a comparison, I paid $3500 for a new GMC 1/2 ton pickup in 1971. Both units had manual shift and a/c.

Three years later, I sold the 240 for $6000. It had 60K miles on it by then. The cars used to keep their values better!

May have just been blowing hot air, but it's possible what he meant to say and didn't say it right was that if you converted the original sales price to 2009 dollars, there'd be hundreds of thousands of them.

There was a huge inflation of prices during the early to mid 70's. Also, there was stil a lot of inflation up to the mid 80's.

My old Ferrari GT 250 pf coupe sold new for about 13,500 in '59...just about exactly what I paid for it in 1994 in semi running condition.
