Diesel price tags-back in the heyday.

Does anybody have pricing information on the w116, w123, w124 w126 original dealer prices in the 80's? i mean the diesels of course.
I am interested in learning about the actual sale prices of our vehicles here in the us back when they first came out.

45-50k range for the W126 diesels, probably similar for the W116....W123's were in the 30-40k range. Expensive considering inflation.

I'm looking at my window sticker:
83 Model: 300D-T (yes, Jimmy) $30,973.00
410 Electrically Operated Sliding Roof 829.00
Distribution & Delivery 114.00

Total Suggested Retail $31,916.00

I paid a bit less through a group buy involving 4 cars. Note how cheap delivery fees were in 1983.

Base prices before options: (NADA Guide)

1971 220D Approximately $5,500

1975 300D Aprox. $12,200

1977 240D Aprox. $12,800

1978 300SD Aprox. $23,600

1978 450SL Aprox. $26,500

1983 240D Aprox. $24,000

1980 300SD Aprox. $30,600

1981 300SD Aprox. $34,100

1985 300SD Aprox. $39,500

1987 300SDL Aprox. $47,000

1987 300D Aprox. $39,500

Prices are for standard models, with no extra price options. In some years there were multiple price increases between the start and end of a model year.

My 1983 300SD Cost about $41k with options. In 86 with 51k miles on it, I paid $27,900 and felt like I was getting a great deal.

For comparisons sake. A 1972 220D, cost about the same as a Cadillac DeVille. A 1972 DeVille weighed about 4700lbs and had something like 385HP. Both were priced around $6,500.

My 91 350SDL stickered at almost $58,000... and it doesn't have any options except for metallic paint IIRC exchange rates had taken a huge hit in 91. For comparison my 92 ECOdiesel was probably stickered at $13,400 and my fully loaded 91 was only $13,500 (guess the exchange rates sucked more in 92?)

I think if you look in perspective, that was a lot of money back then. Also, I think if you look at some sports cars back then, say Corvette, Jag XKE, Saab Sonnet III cost less than that. Also, I think that is close to the price of a Porsche 911 or close. I think the COPO Camero was $7K and Ferrraris Dino around $7K. I think a lot of Ferraris were about $12K or so a few years earlier. There was a huge inflation of prices during the early to mid 70's. Also, there was stil a lot of inflation up to the mid 80's.

We looked at a new 240D Fall of 76

This was at the Dealer in Phoenix, AZ and it was a pretty basic 240D and sticker price was less then $11000.00 and that is what they were selling for. It was the first W123 I had seen Still a lot of money when the typical Chebby Cabrice was selling at around $6000.00.

Wow! That must have had some SERIOUS options . NADA has the base MSRP at $16,770 for a 1979 240D.

My '82's was low 20s ($22 or 23k)

I want to get a sticker for the '87. Can they get those at the dealer, or is it classic center only?

Oh no doubt it was a very good amount of money, I just wish my original owner was still around so I could ask him everything I wanted to know about the car/time he bought it ect... Would be interesting.. But yeah it was pretty expensive lol
