Quick oil change question

Hey guys I know this was probably already discussed, but I am in a bit of a rush and I couldn't find anything in the search.

I just changed my oil on my 85 300D. I changed it hot and removed the oil filter first after letting it sit for 15 minutes.

I drained the oil out and got my rotella T 5w40. I measured out 7.9 quarts and put it into the oil hole on top of the crank case.

I just checked my dipstick and it says I'm a quarter to half an inch over filled

Is this ok? I want to believe that part of that oil will go into the filter and other parts of the engine, but I don't want to damage my engine since I am going on a road trip to Gambriar Ohio.

Can anyone give me some insight please? I am hoping to not have to crawl on my back again after my ordeal last night.

I think so. Probably 3/4 of a quart will go into the filter. Go ahead and start it, let it run for awhile and then recheck you level. I am going to use Rotella 5w40 this winter too.

Did it call for 7.9 quarts? If so, I bet if you run the engine for about 45 seconds, that extra amount will fill up the filter, lines, etc.. Not familiar with how much oil a 300d takes, but I had a similar situation on my 300e... I let it run for about a minute, and the oil level went down.

Crap ok here's what happened.

I've changed the oil on my tractor before, but this is a new ordeal.

I just started the engine and let it ideal for 4 seconds. The oil pressure gauge did not go up so I turned the car off.

I looked under the car and it had a bit of smoke underneath of it I did spill some synthetic outside of the cap. Did I just burn some oil outside of the engine or am I damaging the car?

Edit: Yeah my Haynes manual and the owner's manual calls for 7.9 quarts.

Start it and let it run for a few seconds more.. you arent reading any pressure because all of your oil is at the bottom of the pan. my 300e took 5-8 seconds before the oil gauge started to move. Maybe a diesel expert can chime in, but I think its all the same..

Don't you hate that sinking feeling you get in your stomach when your oil gauge stays that low for that long?

Thanks a ton! I'm going through cleveland today so I'll do a wave in your general direction.

What about the smoke underneath the car? Was it the burn off of that I spilled?

This was my first oil change on my car so bare with me

I will, but what about the smoke underneath of my car I'm hoping for an answer before I gather up the courage to turn it on again.

From what I gather, Your engine was warm when you did the change.. Pop your hood, and take a look where you spilled the oil.. it will probably burn off in a matter of minutes.. Especially if you spilled a bit on the exhaust manifold.

I think that was just spilled oil. Have a friend start it while you observe the engine, have your thumb on the stop lever, if you see oil blowing out somewhere, shut off the engine.

Check underneath for a puddle. Also check around the top of the filter canister. Wipe it dry. Make sure you replace the seal and didn't pinch any lines. (Ask how I know)... Luckly I always do a double check after I put in the oil and before I start the engine. Caught a pinched cable under the side of the cap. Coulda been ugly. If you dripped some oil its most likely the cause of the smoke.
Good luck and congrats.

If you still have an Oil pressure problem check the 2 O-rings at the very end of that long stem that is on the Oil Filter Cap. If either or both are gone some of your Oil will be going drectly back to the Oil Pan.
Size is:
6mmx10 IDx 10mm ODx 2mm w
Autozone sells a Metric O-ring Value pack (plastic box) made by Dorman part #799-450 that has 172 various sized metric O-rings. You get 24 of the above size in the kit.

One of the sizes also fits the small end of Fuel Filter Bolt.

Hey guys,

I did replace all of the washers/seals. I disconnected the green vacuum line so clipping it was a non issue.

I started the car and watched the engine. No spills, drips, and the smoke gradually disappeared.

I'm happy I had a relativly non frightening experiance. I know some people here have much worse
