Opinions on this wagon...

This one is in my neck of the woods. I have asked the seller to call me, so I can ask some more questions about the "metal clank" and maybe go up to see it.

What do you guys think? And what would be a fair price?

I honestly wouldn't pay any more than where its at right now, about 1000.
It has visible rust, probably meaning there's more, and a good chance of needing an engine replacement. There's not a whole lot of loud clanking engine noises that can be simple fixes. Probably ran low on oil or something and developed a rod knock. You might get lucky, but why take the chances. There's a boatload of inexpensive old diesels out there right now. Also, if it does need an engine replacement, it won't be fun to source a wagon engine, complete with SLS pump.

I am inclined to agree with you. I was thinking clanking would be a rod problem. I still may go to see it. What in particular should I look for?

Could the noise be the vacuum pump?
Seems kind of low miles to have rod knock.

If you look at it bring a long heavy plastic handle screw driver or mechanics stethescope. If you use the screwdriver, with the car running, hold the blde against the vacuum pump and other areas with your ear against the handle. You can see where the noise is comming from. If its the pump, it could be a good deal.

Look at the 4 jack points for rust.

Vehicle looks to be in pretty decent shape to me. I'd want to listen to the clank. Could be a lot of things. Loose harmonic balancer, vacuum pump or something else. Might be a good deal if the 'clank' can be fixed. You'd want to make sure the head is good if you plan on swapping in another engine since it'll need the SLS pump/head.

One odd thing is that I can't see the SLS pump high pressure hose in the picture of the engine. I don't see the SLS oil reservoir either. It could just be how the shot is framed but I'd expect to see the high pressure hose passing left to right over are just in front of the valve cover.
I think 84's had the oil reservoir in the right front of the engine compartment.
