whats the fastest youve got your diesel up to?
i saw this post elsewhere when doing a search for cruise control, but only one person entered their diesel so, i thought i'd ask the question over here! i had my 300SD up to 100 very breifly and i thought the car was going to explode!

I had a mix up on a flight time once had to RUN to the airport. My Euro 240D hit 100MPH! I was amazed. While I was at 100, my secretary called me in the car to give me the terminal and gate number, so I had to shut it down to get the call. I barely made the flight, and Ol' Silver got the job done one more time.
My '96 E300D hit 100 once too, but it has twice the horsepower of the 240D. Have a great day, |

What is the fuss about hitting 100 in a diesel?
Reason I asked is because: 1. The petrol MBs we have could touch 100 without any problem; and 2. (more importantly) I'm thinking of getting a 270 cdi - and surely I'm not going to fuss over a 100? Or am I missing a point here?

Geez Larry, you must have had a Texas-sized tailwind to reach 100MPH in a 240D. MB only claims about 85MPH for the four speed version, less for the automatic.
The friend who purchased my '84 300D just got back into Dallas after driving it out to Arizona. He reported hitting 110MPH in far west Texas - a good place to do it. Again, this is faster than MB claims the car is capable - 105 is about it for 123 turbos. I'm getting old and sedate; I can't remember ever having any of my diesels above 90MPH. In my defense I did bounce my late lamented Taurus SHO off the 7300RPM rev limiter in fourth gear a few times... (A pretty decent low buck sports sedan, btw.) I'm embarrased to say that my wife has had our '98 E300 faster than I. She accidently hit 100MPH when pulling around some semi-trucks on the interstate. Yes, that car is fast enough that you can reach the century mark without intending to do so. - Jim |

My 240D is an '84 Euro, I don't know the difference, I used to think it was geared differently than a US car. The Euro cars have a different injection pump that might have something to do with it. And yes, I may very well have been in a downhill stretch with a tailwind. It was the only time I ever saw that speed, and the only time I ever cared to see it in one of these cars, not because it was scary, but because I was afraid it would blow all to pieces. To cheat that a little more, it might have been 98 or 99, but it was 100 in my mind. It was screamin'.
Have a great day, |

It Depends...
It depends on the day, or what mood the car is in... Some days, it loves 105 mph, others, its a push to make 95. Depends on the tail wind, the slope and the wind to the nose. Driving a 123 is like driving a truck at those speeds, drag is felt!

1995 S-350 will go 118 mph. Tachs out at around 4500 rpm's. Does not feel fast at all at this speed. Heavy car.

I had a 1974 Peugeot diesel with a 2.1 liter engine and a 4 speed. Redline was 80, but coming down the Owens Valley I could feel the govonor all the way back. I just put it in neutral and coasted to 100:p Had a rabbit run in front of me at that speed, poor bunny

I've had the 240D up to around 95 on the speedometer, hammer down on a long flat stretch. At this age in the car's life it's hard to tell how accurate that speedo is, though.
I've had the diesel Beetle up to 105 and it still had plenty more to go. - Nathan '83 240D "Steiner" '00 New Beetle TDI |

You might want to search other posts. There have been quite a few discussions as I remember.
My 84 300DT liked to hover between 103 and 107. If you get some less desirable gas, it can drop significantly. Fuel differences, wind, etc. can play a big factor. Length of stay doesn't seem to matter. With 265,000 miles Bennie would sit on 105 (or whatever the top flavor was for that day) sometimes for well over an hour, with periods of 4-6 hours above 90. Whatever the traffic and the gas tank would bear, that's where we'd be. I sold it to a friend so that I could purchase a 500E, but he says it still runs like a charm now at 325,000. Never even had the heads off. Just Factory PM schedule, w/ oil & filter every 3K & go. Happy Motoring

I ran my 300D up to 90 right after changing the timing chain just to make sure that it was not "one tooth off"
The E320 has seen 5500 rpm in high gear.

speed
I have only had my 300D up to 80mph. Had the 300TD up to 90 in Canada. I had the Kenworth up to 108, but give me some slack here I had 6000 gallons of milk in the tank I was pulling. ( It was 3a.m. and I was pretty much the only thing on the road)

I was the SLOW truck!
Well Bill I wont say how fast my log truck would go. I need to point out though that, that night I was PASSED by a fellow hauling "swinging beef". I heard two guys talking on the C.B. about the one driver just getting his tractor back from the shop. ( he had new injectors installed and the computer bypassed) the second driver said he could see that it had made a big difference and would driver #1 PLEASE slow down so he could catch up and they could "run together". To which driver #1 replied,"Now Mikey you know I have rules" I don't slow down for nobody to catch up, but this one time I will back it down to say 115 for 3 miles and if you haven't caught up by then , FORGET IT I'm going to put her back in the big gear. All this time I was laughing to myself thinking, there aint NO WAY a rig will go that fast , let alone a dang FORD AEROSTAR. Well, the joke was on me 'cuz when he went by me it dang near pushed me onto the shoulder, less than 20 seconds later the second one went by me. ( the second truck was a Cat powered freightliner....I asked) I don't know for sure how fast they were going, but was tempted to get out of MY truck to see if I was parked! Their tail lights disappeared in less than a minutes time. I was running on the cruise control at 65 at the time. BTW, after I put the first 250k miles under me in a big truck I made some changes. For one I NEVER drove over 60mph in Mi, especially with double trailers. Also, where the speed limit was 70, I was content to run at that speed. Guess I'm getting older or something?
