The upper hose being soft this morning means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!!!!

Unless the system holds pressure infallibly, it will de-pressurize overnight.

One common place that the '87 300D loses coolant is the hose between the overflow tank (the one you see ahead of the battery) and the pressure reservoir (inside the right fender). Raise the overflow tank and check as much of the hose as you can see, ... removing the plastic fender liner might be in your future.

Condition condition condition.

If it has leather (rare), or heated leather (more rare), and has not spend any of its life in the rust-belt, it's certainly worth finding a head to repair it.

If it's worn 'tex, clear-coat peeling from the paint, and a salt-belt car it might be worth $500 with a cracked head.

...It is a vinyl upolstery California rust free car...I don't know about the first owner but the second owner and good friend is a diesel mechanic by trade...The car was always covered and impecibly maintained...

...I just put new tires on it and put in a new battery 2 days ago...

...I spoke with Mark,...the owner of Sun Valley Mercedes Dismantelers...He said if you can find a used head they run about $750???...

...I don't really feel like doing it but,...how labor intensive is a head replacement???...

...I would really like to find a black or dark grey '96 300D...

...I just took some pics of it,...and will see if I can post them...

And you're located where?

There's a good black '87 for sale here on the forum for $1500, southern car, also 'tex interior. Should be worth more, seems like when I was looking it was hard to get a straight '87 for less than $3500, apparently the market has softened over the past year or two.

To be worth anything on this forum you'll have to lose the chrome wheel-arch trim and give the interior a SERIOUS cleaning, but if the head is suspected to be cracked it's still maybe a $500 car.

Replacing the head is probably a day's work if you know what you're doing and nothing breaks in the process.

..I am currently in North Hollywood as I divide my time between Lake Oroville (75 miles north of Sacramento) and the Los Angeles area...This car lives in North Hollywood...My two 300SD's live at Lake Oroville...I'm not having a great deal of luck finding a dark '96 300D...

...Still scratching my head???...

...I just took the car on about a 75 mile jaunt...Mountain roads,...uphill downhill,...air on air off...heater on heater off...The cooling system was full of fresh water,...no antifreeze...The resovoir was completely full when I left and half full when I returned...I have always been under the impression that resovoirs were only supposed to be filled half way (the expansion factor)...Does anyone know if this is the case with these cars???...Did water expansion force the excess water out of the overflow???...

...Any way there was no overheating...So once again I am stumped...Does anyone have any thoughts???.....As of yet I have not attempted to get to the hose clamps under the resovoir...
Thanks again Willie

...More To The Story...

...Before I took the car on the 75 mile jaunt,...I had put a can of KW block sealer in the system...Again the car did not use any water after this...I have been driving it off and on and not losing any water...

...I had noticed something like a water mark on a new pair of shoes I have been wearing,...on the right shoe on the right side,...where my right foot would rub on on the panel to the right of the gas pedal...I just rubbed my finger on the bottom of this carpeted panel and it feels like it may have been saturated with antifreeze...I had been periodically smelling antifreeze inside the car until there was none left in the cooling system...

...Now I am wondering if the KW sealed up a leak in the heater core???...If so it still doesn't explain the black greasy oily residue showing up in the coolant resovoir....The previous owner is not sure if he had ever replaced the resovoir???...If he did it may have come from one of the self service wrecking yards near us and may have had some residue in it???...Although that is not his style to put on a contaminated part???...

It takes a good cleaning to get residual oil out of the cooling system. Flushing with dishwashing solution a couple of times seems to do it. Remove the reservoir for a good cleaning so you have a good baseline.

Swing by here next time you head north - http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/1445223768.html
