LOL at the repeated use of the word ghetto to describe some of the tame stuff in these pics, especially the cardboard car which looks like some prank executed by a bunch of dorks more than anything else. You guys probably don't even know what a true hood car looks like, even if it passed right in front of you.

The drivers hands are supposed to be on the steering wheel, not resting on the arm rest. Therefore no such "grab handle" on the drivers door.

Not sure if that's the reason, seeing as the W126 has such a handle.

I've owned 123's for four years and I never noticed the driver's armrest was different.

LOL yeah the cardboard car is a prank, or at least i'd hope so!

Really? I wouldn't know a true hood car? I'm in California and and from Los Angeles and have family in La Puente and San Gabriel... Lived in LA for a bit before I move to crappy a$$ palm springs.. Have you heard of Compton? East LA? They don't drive Bentleys there

Even in palm springs there are hood cars all over the place... They're so ugly and I don't see how anyone thinks they looks good.. especially when they have "LOCOS" in big lettering on the back... I would imagine everyplace has hood cars... Unless you live in Pleasantville...

I know about Compton. Do you know about Third Ward? You may see a Bentley there, but the professional driving it to visit where they grew up will go back to the burbs or the nice neighborhood on the fringe on Third Ward after being pulled over by HPD one too many times.
I was talking about the guys who were talking about loose wires, blind spot mirrors and aftermarket MB grilles as being ghetto. I'd be more inclined to call those things tacky or cluttered. A hood car is WAY beyond tacky or cluttered, like this.

Funny you should say that. There's a neighborhood here called Pleasantville, it's the hood now.

I have not heard about Third Ward becuase it can't compare to the ghettos of East LA and Compton! lol just kidding! My friend from Austin tells me Houston has a whole lot of ghetto but what place doesn't, except for pleasantville, oh wait! it's a hood now! LOL

I actually live right next to a ghetto that was THEE ghetto of Palm Springs back in the 90's and used to be one of the most dangerous places in the area.. gunfights, drive bys, drugs all that nasty stuff.. But has cleared up and is nothing more than a normal ghetto now... sometimes I go through it because it's a faster way to get home and I see the ghettomobiles.. When I would take my friends they would get all scared thinking they were going to get shot It's called "Gateway" lol and don't get me started on dream homes!

Any who in gateway they have some pretty ghettotastic cars like a ford escort all messed up and needing lots of work BUT has brand new 17" chrome rims and the owner cruises down the street at -5 miles an hour to show off his prize haha

This is EXACTLY what I see all the time around here:

That fad started down here in the south. I'm surprised to see that it's made it to Cali. I thought you Californians liked your cars to scrape the ground.

Sorry to get this off topic.

Ok, I'm trying to quit, let's get back on arm rests.

Seriously, I'd wondered the same thing about those handles. On the other side, I think that some Euro model 123s don't even have the handle extension on any of their doors.

why not? this part of the door handle doesn't get in the way during driving

Which leads me to believe the real reason has more to do with the width of the steering wheel, and narrower interior.

Both explanations have some truth. I often thought the huge steering wheel was actually a liability, but saying so in the '70s and '80s often landed you in an argument if you were in the presence of a MB enthusiast, salesman, or dealer. But a smaller steering wheel would have solved the space limitaion issue. Now all Mercedes cars come with small-ish (ie, normal size) steering wheels.
