w123 (and other) driver door panel--why no grab handle?

guys, have you noticed the driver's door panel lacks the grab handle that goes from the main armrest/handle to the area behind the door handle? this is true of the w123, r107, and i think also the w116. i believe (iirc) not so on the w126, and def. not so on the 124/201.

why not? this part of the door handle doesn't get in the way during driving

well you could of at least cropped out the ghetto looking switch with wiring harness and the mini mirror glued onto the side view mirror...but yeah, i do know that it's possible to retrofit the grab handle to the driver's side door

good to know it's been done by someone as a confirmation though

That`s good, that gave me a good laugh.

And to think some people pay a fortune on Fiberglass mods.

All they need is cardboard and Duct tape .

No doubt. When a question is answered, I don't understand how an insult could follow.

Yeah, I see it in his postings.

I pulled the handle off the L/R door with the chrome piece. will have to cut the panel a little for the screw tap on the handle. more or less plug and play.

I always thought it strange MB did this on the w123. I do notice the handle is a little close to the wheel, and when I pull my foot back towards the seat and raise my knee, it is tight. so I kind of see the reason MB used the handle they did. probably for liability reasons.

I have had it for so long, Iam use to it and compensate w/o thinking about it. It does dress it up some.

My take on it is, it's not a grab handle. The main armrest contains the functional grab handle. The piece in question is merely for passengers resting their arms on the arm rests, to hold with their hands so that their arms don't fall off. The drivers hands are supposed to be on the steering wheel, not resting on the arm rest. Therefore no such "grab handle" on the drivers door.

That's the explanation I heard. My passengers need to hold on, but I got my hands on the wheel most of the time. Especially at the times my Passengers are in a panic.
