uh oh ignition lock getting recalcitrant
I have been reading all the threads about ignition lock nightmares and I am now experiencing the sional non-turning ignition cylinder.
I did a search and came up with numerous threads on column mounted switch R&R but nothing on 123 dash mounts. Can someone point me to the correct thread or give me a rundown? Thanks

Are you planning on taking the entire dash out? Probably not necessary. On my w126 I didn't have to do all that, can't say much for the w123.

It's pretty easy to remover the cylinder as long as it still turns. It is removed from the front, no need to work under the dash. You just turn the key to the first position and use a small tool (paper clip) through the small hole at the edge of the cylinder. That releases the ring around the cylinder so it can be unscrewed, allowing you to pull out the cylinder.
If you need to remove the entire ignition assembly, it will take 20-30 minutes under the dash. It's not a nightmare unless you wait until the key can no longer be turned. |

It is a PITA to get the whole ign assembly without removing the dash but certainly doable.

It's not that bad if you enjoy standing on your head for half an hour.

Third, I've never had much of an issue removing the ignition assy without removing the dash. And if you are only removing the tumbler portion then you certainly won't need to remove the dash. Removing the dash is simple if you eventually have to go that route. But, uh, putting it back in isn't nearly as enjoyable.....

I replaced the cylinder on the wagon over the summer, and within 2 months was drilling the steering lock assembly out b/c it had failed. If it turns, you might think about replacing both.
Have now replaced the whole assembly in both w123s and never removed the dash-

just did this myself last weekend. i bought a whole new (used, but new to me) steering lock assembly that is in perfect working condition, along with the door handles that match the key and the trunk lock assembly as well. replaced all four with no problems, in no time. didn't have to take the dash out and the replacement was easy because my key still worked. better safe than sorry. ignition, doors, and trunk got a new lease on life!

So I can remove my ignition tumbler before it locks up and just replace it with a new unit? I assume a new key too?

Yes, assuming it's the tumbler that's causing the problem. If you order the tumbler from the dealer, based on the VIN, you will get a tumbler and new key to match your car. As I recall, it took a few days and cost around $100 when I did mine last year.

The easiest check is to remove the tumbler and turn the key with it in your hand. If the tumbler feels glitchy, replace it. I have had the actual lock assembly fail where the electrical portion of the switch connects to main assembly. Actually, I had removed the tumbler to replace the lock assembly when I noticed the tumbler needed to be replaced as well.

I really have to take a shop day, what with this ignition thing, the new style primer pump is leaking,of course my whiny driveline.
Ah well, winter will be here sooner than later.
