240D manual trans to 300DT swap, possible?

assuming no way based on torque and hp difference but just curious. What about dropping the 85 DT engine/trans into an 80 240D body?

Skippy 10-21-2009 05:23 PM

Very doable. Of course, if you have the manual transmission already, why would you use the slushbucket? Another thing to consider is that the 240D comes with a 3.69 rear end. If you have the 2.88 from the '85 donor car, that would be a much better choice.

It'd be a rocket ship (relatively) off the line if you keep the 3.69.

Skippy 10-21-2009 05:41 PM

True, but the 85 mph top speed would kind of suck.

BY slushbucket are you referring to the manual trans. Figured these were pretty solid, something I shoudl know about?

A "SlushBox" is slang for an automatic trans. I would assume simply by comparison that the poster was commenting, why would you want to give up the manual trans for an auto.

Looking at the final drive numbers, there is a HUGE difference in gearing between the two boxes.

Top gear should be direct drive, in both "boxes". The difference is in rear axle ratios.

I understand the flywheel for a 240 is not as heavy duty as a 300 one.

Am looking to put the 240d manual into a 300dt not the other way around.

No problem, this has been done many times. this is a DIY project, just have to have all the parts. It is pretty much plug and play.

I just did this swap in April this year and already have just over 10,000 miles on it.

As I understand it, you have a 85 300D, correct? and you want to install the 240D manual trans, just so Iam on the same page with you.

here are a few threads on the swaps done, and some good reading to get up to speed.

the 85 for some reason and maybe some 84`s, MB made the hole in the crank a different size so the standard pilot bearing will not work. you might have to have a bushing machined to fit in there.

This thread by TOMJ is a good one, detailing what he went through to get it to work. best way to do it though, is make a bushing.

Charlie

Later on TOMJ mentioned where making the cup in the above thread idin`t work, the bearing spun.

Thank you for the clarification. I was under the impression that you wanted to transplant the engine and transmission from a 300D into a 240D body.

slushbucket=highly derogatory term for an automatic transmission, indicating that the user of the term massively prefers manual transmissions.

We should have picked up on the slushbucket clue. Next time I will completely ignore clearly written statements and go by the hidden clues. :o
