Water pump stuck, need to remove
I decided that a water pump replacement was In order so I took the day to go ahead and do it.
After getting most of everything off I am left with one bolt that doesn't have adequate clearance for removal. My manual tells me that I can rotate the pump so that a notch allows removal of this bolt. The problem is that I can't rotate the water pump. What shall I do? I am doing this repair while on vacation and I leave this beach house in 3 days. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you aren't trying to remove the water pump housing? If you are just replacing the pump, there is no need to remove the housing from the block; just remove the pump from the housing.

My manual told me to remove the housing and the only reason I tried was because the pump wasn't coming off.
So how do I remove the pump after taking off the 5 bolts? It's not coming out easily.

Take a hammer to it. Tap it downward it will pop off.

use a big flathead screwdrive, gently hammer it in then twist or pop it off.

IT sounds crazy but they are right. Smack it hard and it will come off.

Funny- I am having the same issue (on almost the same day!) but on the other side of the US. I tried a hammer - now that I read this post I will try a little harder.
One other piece to add - I changed coolant in my 84 300 sd to Zerex a few weeks ago. Drove it about 200 miles then noticed a leak coming from below the water pump (coincidence??). When I released the bolts I had a lot of coolant come out, but it looks green (the older stuff) despite the fact that I thought I had flushed it almost completely by draining, refilling, running, draining, refilling, etc. about a dozen times. Any ideas on why I had old coolant inside?

water pump housing
The hammer worked!
However, due to a bolt in the water pump that sheared, I had to take off the housing as well, which is probably a good thing, given that the location of the original leak matches most closely with the gasket on the housing, and not the pump. Since I am having some trouble pulling out the sheared bolt, I may have to replace the housing....

Danny, there is an 84 300D at the Moss Landing PNP If you need to pull a WP Housing.
