I'm nervous, very nervous.

I have not had anything to fix or adjust for a year. No valves, filters, air filter bracket, vacuum, no light bulbs, sunroof ect.. I am a few weeks away from hitting 300k, on this daily driver and I'm nervous. One year, 12,000 miles on a 26 year old car with only oil changes, it's going to come fast and hard.

:sweatdrop

Well...if you wantta get warmed up....

I mean...to prepare for what's coming your way....you should volunteer to help all us with our challenges! I sense you are feeling left out...abandoned by a car that just won't get sick on ya. Hey, anybody need help??

count your blessings...if you were up North, I might suspect that the problems are waitin' for the snow to fly...that's what happens to me!:D

rderton 10-26-2009 06:22 PM

You must be at the bottom of the wave

When I first got my 300D I spent so much my wife declared it a hobby. But its been 3-4 years (bought it in '01) since I've had to do much to it.

tobybul 10-26-2009 07:30 PM

x2.... I have to create/invent things to do with the cars since I have not had anything to do with them for almost 2 years now.....:P

I wouldn't panic over the 300K number, but at some point you will have to decide on your "intentions" for this car. Are you planning on keeping it for the long term and doing "whatever it takes" to keep it in good condition, do you plan on driving it for some specific amount of miles, or are you planning on keeping it until it starts costing significant money to maintain/repair?

Once you decide what your plans are, you will know how much effort/money you are willing to spend. Realistically, this car is reaching the mileage where you will start seeing potentially expensive issues.

okyoureabeast 10-26-2009 08:54 PM

Stop complaining. Mine pasted the 333,333 mark :D

Have you done any other maintenance like trans fluid and filter change, differential fluid, air filter, etc?

pawoSD 10-26-2009 08:58 PM

Hey count yourself lucky, I've had to replace my rear brakes AND transmission on my W126 this year....and I am a ways away from 300k..... That will change fast though, if I get a job I am in the running for. I will have to commute over 35,000 miles a year.

GregoryV022 10-26-2009 09:03 PM

just change them before they fail.

valve adjustment is advised.

I love it when one considers 300k as short term mileage.

LOL, that seems to be the point where some "big ticket" issues are likely to show themselves. Based on my 300D, there were some significant repairs in the 250-350K mile range:

Rebuilt tranny
Half Shafts
Timing Chain (original engine)
Oil Pump (original engine)
Oil Pump Chain (original engine)
AC system
Climate control system
Cruise control system
Radiator
Vacuum pump
Injection pump
etc.

That list represents $10K+ of items, before I replaced the engine and rebuilt the (front and rear) suspension in the 400-500K range (another $6-8K of work). This does not include several $1000 of "miscellaneous" repairs and maintenance. At this point, I need a paint job and I'll be in good shape for a while.

The point is, 300K is a good time to decide if you are really willing to maintain a car for the long term. If not, you should think about getting into a lower mileage car.

No "hail marys" involved. I just made a "do whatever it takes" visit to my indy, so I'm in pretty good shape for a while. I'm pretty sure all the moving parts have been replaced at least once.

sd300td 10-26-2009 11:28 PM

Sounds like some deferred maintenance going on...the car needs fuel and air filters, a valve adjustment within the next 12 months, probably a coolant and brake fluid flush within the next 12 months, trans fluid?, brakes are good for 20-40,000 miles...so that'll likely get done in the next 12-24 months, belts? And let's not even think about the old car stuff...this is just maintenance. Yeah I'd be sweating too...

dude, ease up. people over-use these things. waaaay too much

skydivetoday 10-27-2009 08:45 AM

I have owned this car since new with a once a year valve, filters and any coming up work like tires, brakes ect.. Every two years coolant, trans, and rear end change. I do 3,000 mile oil changes in between. I have never gone a year without an adjustment or repair. Never!

A year ago, when I did my yearly upkeep, I began to use 20% wvo, i micron filtered, just to play. The same fuel filters are still in and the car and it run smoother. It's time for my yearly again and I am trying to connect how wvo makes the lights and a/c last longer.

In the mean time I'm nervous. :sweatdrop:

matthias08 10-27-2009 11:02 AM

I've had something... at least every other month...

and that was just when i owned 1 car

yesterday 2 cars were in the shop, one of which i pick up from the dealer tomorrow. :o

Is the Yanmar a "Three Banger"?

'Go "Down There" and change the fluid in the Transmission...Pumping it out
and Re-Filling it will Chase away those Bad Karma Thoughts!
How's the Alignment of the Prop Shaft V.S. The Stuffing box?

I got the Bermuda 40 re-powered with the Yanmar Saildrive a few years ago and we have none of that now. I mostly clean things here in Florida waters (wife will not go for the first mate position story). If you need to re-power a motor-sail in Georigia, get the Yanmar Saildrive and it will give you more time to spend on the car.
