Can you remove #1 glowplug without removing manifold?
Just had the #1 glowplug on the 98 E300 die.
Can this glowplug be removed without taking off the Intake Manifold? Anyone been successful? It looks like I can snake through the fuel lines with a socket and extension...and this glowplug is in front of the Manifold. But I don't want to end up breaking it off if it is at a wierd angle. Thanks |
IMO it is akin to doing DV's with the manifold on. Its possible; but not worth the risk.

The last glow plug that failed on my 99 E300 was #1, and I found it pretty easy to access, remove, and replace without removing the manifold. It was almost a straight shot with ordinary socket tools. I did disconnect one or two of the fuel lines first. Go for it! Don't forget to ream the hole and use some anti-seize on the new plug.

Ya, I looked at it again and its worth trying to remove it first without messing with the manifold. I have had good success chattering them loose with my air impact wrench set on low to medium settings. I believe it shakes some of the carbon loose from around the shank of the glow plug. I think I have enough room to run the socket and extentsion with the impact wrench.
If it turns out to be really siezed I will pull the Manifold. |
remember to keep the torque below 30 Nm or 22 Ft/lbs there are post on the snapping point of the glow plugs
