Odometer Inquiry
In December of 08', while driving back from Dallas my odometer gave up the ghost at 154k. (I suspect broken teeth on the gears) I reset the trip odometer at the gas station and that was it for the both of them. I've been keeping track and by my estimates in January 10' I will have added another 39k to the clock. If I take my car to a shop to have it fixed will they be able to ADD those extra 39k to the odometer? Would they just put a new one in with 0000000??? I'm sure they've never been asked to ADD miles to a car but I think it should be accurate. Also, I want into that high-mileage club badly and was kinda pissed that it would quit less than 1000 miles from the first qualification!

There are several threads on odometer repair and Diesel Giant has a how-to. It's mainly about W123's, but I think yours is similar (126, right?). If you do it yourself, you can reset the odometer to whatever you'd like. A shop is probably only going to give it back to you with the reading that's on it now, for fear of somehow being blamed for some sort of odometer fraud. Either way, if you ever sell the car, be sure to fully disclose the odometer situation. Otherwise, it is possible to run afoul of the law.

if you send it off to www.speedometer.com, I do think he can put the miles on it for you.....
Yeah, I know, you want to get to the 200K miles badge, sooner, right?

Altering the odometer miles is not at all illegal as long as its disclosed during sale and the door pillar is permanently stamped.
I used to to it frequently years ago when working at the used car lot. Cars would have a fried cluster, I'd swap in a good used one from the junkyard and stamp the date and original cluster miles on the door pillar by the VIN plate with my alphanumeric punch set. I've replaced mine and adjusted the miles on the new one to be correct, it's not very difficult.

It is a DIY job. Tedious, and a PITA at times, but not that difficult. Call Jeff at odometergears.com, he'll hook you up.

I think there are directions on line someplace, but you have to remove the needle and the front face to get into it. If you move the needle to below the pin and mark the position, you can put it back in the correct position. You have to very carefully pry the needle off, I use two spoons to get even pressure under the needle's hub. Once you take it apart, you will see how it's put together.

No need to take off the face. Pinch the odometer tab shaft end round and take it out. You can set each number individually as you put the tabs back in.

The W126 is an electric spedo, and the W123 is a mechanical spedo (except for the 81TD which is electrical).
If I remember right the Diesel Giant site shows a 123 spedo, not the electric one. once apart, the 126 is part mechanical and part electrical with a printed circuit board. looks a little more complicated to dissasemble and assemble w/o screwing something up. the 123 looks pretty straight forward to r & r. just don`t remove the shaft the number wheels are on and drop the wheels. I think ea one goes in a certain way against the next one. don`t ask how I know . one thing about using 2 spoons to remove the needle, use some masking tape or other tape on the back of the spoon to protect the face.
