240 idle adjustment

Can any one tell me how to adjust the idle on my 83-240D-auto. It is running too fast. I tried the idle adjustment in the cabin and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Thanks in advance,
Anthony

It's on the injection pump. On the block side. You'll see a screw head with a lock nut at the bottom. I think a deep well 14mm is needed to get the lock nut loose. The IIRC clockwise with the screw will raise idle and counterclockwise will lower idle. Then tighten the lock nut back down.

I use a 14mm Crowsfoot Wrench on an extension to loosen and tighten the nut.

Why do some manuals say '81 and earlier is a DIY but '82 and later is dealer only? Some sort of emissions thing?

idel adjustment

I looked at the injection pump to see what I need to adjust. There are 2 screws with nuts, one on top of the pump which looks like it's on a vacuum device and another down behind the pump next to the motor which with my expertise is impossible to get to. Even with a crows head wrench (If I had one). I don't see how I would be able to turn the nut. Any other type of wrench it is simply not accessible.
Thanks for your replies any additional information will be helpful.

The pics are of a 300D turbo.
Using a DEEP 14mm 1/2 inch socket, loosen the lock nut, remove the ratchet drive, then with a flat screw driver down through it, rotate the screw while holding the socket with a pair of pliers.
The rack has been removed, which is why you don't see it.

now that the question's been answered--same process for turbo engines? also what should the normal idle be for the turbo?

Same for the turbo. The book says 750 rpm, as I recall. I like it closer to 600 rpm.

RPM

How can you tell the rpm on a 240D. No Tachometer.

I do it by ear/feel. If it's running rough, speed it up a little until it smooths out.
