Strange vibration in my 98 E300
Only noticeable from about 50mph and up. Seems like the whole car is vibrating, not shaking but a mild vibration that comes and goes. Seems to rise and fade on a 3-5 second cycle. I feel it in the seat and steering wheel. I have changed all the wheels, front end align, new tie rod ends, motor mounts about 40K ago, recent diesel purge. I have not: checked the flex disc or carrier bearing. I'll search on how to check these (if you think they may be the problem). Any other thoughts on what I need to check?

Some will direct you to LCA bushings...are yours original? I have trouble believing that LCA bushings being worn can cause vibration but I do believe they can make a car prone to vibrate from other faulty parts worse.
Carrier driveshaft bearing/carrier/flex joint/u-joint are also all a possibility.

Thanks Marty.
I forgot to mention that it is in need of shocks on all four corners. LCA's are original.

My OEM shocks developed freeway bounce at about 190k; replacing them helped the feel of the car but it was short lived. LCA bushings didnt help much. Sway bar bushings and links helped more.
Is your trans mount OEM? It could be the culprit. I think Uberwgn did a nice DIY on replacing.

Trans mount is orig. I guess I'll start replacing some bushings and checking the bearings and flex plate/ universals. Thanks to all for the advice.

Those are all good places to start. You should be able to inspect the LCA bushings for play and see if they are still good. The tranny mount is by far the easiest thing to replace. 20 minutes at most and no special tools are required.

Check the fluid level in the rear diff and make sure the vent is clear.
