Hi Bob,

Are you sure it's not an injector going South?

Yeah bob, I'd vote on the injector above a rod before condemning the motor/rod, try moving the injector to #1 and seeing if the noise moves with it.

Hi All

Thanks for the responses i never thought of it being an injector,i will try tomove the number five to one see if the sound moves with it.The engine runs like a clock except for the pop pop pop noise..will see.. I must say though i wouldn't recommend to anyone a 1999 e300 just to many things have needed repaired..Iallready did the ip pump orings did it myself with the help of this shop forum hardest part was just starting..One note here in the new york area u can not get the replacement orings from mercedes they won't service them any more want u to buy rebuilt pumps..at 280.00 a piece I was able to scream enough at them that they gave me there last six..
Other repairs
Window regs
Stop light problems replace holders many times still defective notice
knocking noise infront seems least of my problems now
GPs all
See what i mean.

Something's wrong...a rebuilt IP at $280? Maybe $2800.

You also don't need the dealer's permission to buy the parts, just tell them the PNs and ask them to order them for you. If they won't go to another dealer and call MB USA and tell them the dealer refused to order parts for you. They are supposed to order any parts you ask for. If they don't they are in violation of their agreement with MB. Of course, they can charge whatever they want so ask first.

Any car which has been neglected will require catch-up repairs.

If you need injectors I have a perfect set of 6, matched and balanced I can sell you for $250.

Hi

Its not injectors for $280.00 apiece.. it was the ip pumps six in total for $280.00 or so apiece..And as far as telling mercedes dealer that they have to sell me orings that mb has said they won't service any more maybe where u live but in New york thats what they were telling me..I did eventually get them but i had to get fairly strong with them..and had to go to another dealer..

Thanks

I dont think the car was neglected at all from previous owners from what i can sermise just maybe wasn't put together that well..who knows!

There is some sort of mis-communication going on with your dealer. There are no *pumps* in the IP.

Inj's from the dealer *might* cost $280 ea.

The orings and crush washers to replace the delivery valve seals (x6) cost about $10 and are readily available through other suppliers. Dealer charges ~$600 for that job because of labor needed to access the pump. The DV repalcement itself doesnt take more than an hour.

Most of those who have offered advice have done that job themselves. Is slightly techinal, but not that difficult if cautious.

How did the inj swap go?

If you have a bad rod you'll be the first that I can remember in th years I've been on this forum. I'd seriously recommend exploring causes.

A bad inj can sound like Thor himself is inside the block with his Hammer and he's mad and he wants out. Now!!!

I suppose its remotely possible you replaced the Delivery Valve Elements or Colars. In that cae you should probably just buy a rebuilt IP. It would be cheaper than having yours fixed.

I suggest you post a copy of the parts invoice.

And the chances are if you removed any of those elements it is the cause of the problems you are having. If you read through some of the posts about replacing the DV seals you will see there's a lot of cautions about taking stuff out of the IP other that removing what is absolutely necessary to do the job. You should only remove the screw-cap cover, spring, and crush washer and replace it along with the seal o-ring. Once you start disturbing those internal elements you might as well remove the IP and send it in to a bosch shop for rebuilding and recalibration.

This is one job that, if done right will repair the leak for $10 and a few hours of your time...if done wrong you are looking at a lot more $$$ to get your IP back in order (if you didn't do something that would render it unfixable, that is).
