Alarming Sound When Braking

All of a sudden my 83 240D is making a very strange and disconcerting sound during braking. It is a loud one time metalic tap or knock that occurs a second or two after applying moderate and continuous braking pressure such as when braking for a stop sign or light. As I'm coming to a stop I can get it to make the sound several times but only if I completely let off the brakes and then reapply them. Each time I reapply the brakes the same sound a single loud metalic clack. I recently replaced the front rotors and pads and am dealing with the typical squealing boloney but the new parts have been in for a couple months now. It definitely sounds like it's coming from the front of the car. Any Ideas. Suspension components? Ball Joints?

Check the wheels are tight.

Could be a worn component, or something could be loose. I would take a look around for anything that might have come loose, anything from wheels to calipers.

You'll have to actually look but it will be obvious. I had a mechanic not tighten the caliper bolts. One backed out causing the caliper to slop around making strange noises. Poor paid work makes the case for DIY. Too bad I can't hire me & still have the time to do something else.

That sounds a lot like worn guide rod mounts.

X2 and I would avoid driving it until I had if fixed. Something is loose that shouldn't be!!

Did you repack the wheel bearings and not tighten them properly?

Thanks for the input guys. I did the work myself. I had the wheels off this weekend to feel around for loose parts. Everything appeared tight. The only thing I noticed is that the brake pad retaining clips are getting a little punky and don't feel like they are really holding the pads in place as firmly as they ought to. Wheel bearings were replaced, repacked and preloaded to MB specs. All steering linkages, tie rods, steering damper etc. are tight. Is it possible that the sway bar is the culprit because I have noticed the ol' girl wants to wander at highway speeds. Also I can feel the "clunk" telegraphing through the brake pedal when it happens which leads me to believe that it is something in the braking system. If guide rods are responsible is there a definitive way to determine whether they are bad? I'm stumped.

if you just pump your brakes as you are stopping, the noise repeats, or you have to let off totally, and then reapply?
guide rod bushings, are in the body, and the rod is attached to the bottom control arm. follow the rod that is attached to the bottom control arm over to the body. if it's rusty and loose looking you found the problem if it's clean and the rubber is solid, then post more symptoms.
