I have an '87 300sdl with a dead 722.3 trans. There is a 722.4 for sale locally from a diesel car. Will these transmissions swap out? The 722.4 is in a '90 300d 2.5 turbo.

No. The 722.4 is a significantly weaker transmission that can't hold the power of your engine.

ok, but would it work for long enough to rebuild the other?

The designation W4A0xx tells us the maximum input torque in kpm (kilopondmeter).
1kpm=7.23lb/ft.

No, its a computer controlled 5-speed automatic. Getrag makes manual transmissions (717).

interesting.. Howcome can a 2.5td engine with 168lbs/ft be delivered with a 722.4 tranny speced to 145lbs/ft torque?

Just curious cuz I have a european 190e 2,5td automatic. 1988. No egr, no electronic idle, no nuthin gadgets. I belive Rear end ratio is 2.65. ~2500rpm@62mph.

Do I have the bad 722.4 or the good .3 tranny? I have 7mm tuning plans, so I hope for the beefy..

Yes I've question that info on post # 4 before. I don't think it is accurate.

You do have the 722.4 and will probably have to do some research to see the proper torque rating for it.

To wyldemannn, I would think it would work on a temporary basis until you get your proper trans rebuilt. It will not last very long though, so get your 722.3 trans build sooner than later.
You will need to get the 722.4's torque converter because it is different than the 722.3. Smaller input and different splines.

The only thing I would be worried about is the length of the trans. Although the .4 is physically smaller then the .3, I think the length would be the same. But don't quote me on it.
