OK, my motor mount is just stuck

Amazingly, all of the bolts holding the motor mounts onto my 240D broke free without a whole lot of trouble (other than the PITA of getting the allen wrench in the hole. With all three bolts out, I jacked up the engine w/ a 2X4 ... the whole car just goes up, mount intact. There aren't any engine shocks on this car, unless I'm really, really stupid, which is a possibility tonight. Should I just pry the mount apart? Maybe it's just stuck? Am I missing something?

There's a third mount in the 240d iirc. Instead of the shocks I guess.

I'm pretty sure it's just the two mounts and the tranny mount ... but AFAIK you don't need to take all three mounts out to change one. Right?

On my '83 240D there are 3 mounts - the two primary mounts on each side and then a "anti-vibration T-mount" that is located just behind that oil pan.

You do not need to remove the lower T-mount (if your earlier model has that) to replace the side mounts - at least I didn't when I replaced mine. I replaced both side mount at the same time and then changed the T-mount out later.

If you have all three bolts out, with the engine jack up, and the mount is stick to one side or the other - I would just smack it with whatever you can get in there - it should just fall out if you have the engine jacked up high enough. Just be careful when you jack up the engine - maybe loosen the fan shround so you don't damage the fan. And check to make sure there aren't and linkage or steering component running from that the engine to the firewall that are under too much stress.

There is a third mount ... thanks guys. It looks like crud, too, so I'll swing out to the dealer tomorrow and replace that too. Not sure if that's what's keeping me from getting the mounts off, but it might be ... I tried prying at the mounts and smacking them, and neither seemed to get me anywhere. We'll see tomorrow.

Next time just remove the big bolts from below the car. Then raise the engine. This will give you much more room to remove the smaller bolts that hold the mounts to the frame.

I removed the two bolts holding the third mount behind the oil pan (I think those were the only two), all six bolts are out of the mounts and still, when I jack the engine, the whole car goes with it. Ugh. Maybe it will make more sense in daylight, but I hate to call it a night without achieving anything.

I don't mean to be insulting, but are you sure you are putting the 2x4 on just the oil pan to jack up he engine?

Don't worry, I even second-guessed myself on that. I'm pretty sure it's on the oil pan. Either that or I've been terribly mistaken in changing my oil for some time now.

Hmmm. Odd. i don't get it. You have taken out the larger bolt from below and then the two smaller bolts from above. Three bolts on each side? And then you jack up the engine and the whole car raises? Uhhhhh . . . .

That was my reaction. Maybe the PO glued the mounts in. I swear, this car ...

If it makes you feel any better, I just broke the connector end on one of my fuel lines - looks like I won't be driving tomorrow. Better go lube up the bike chain. I hate it when my cars won't run!

I've had this happen before, and I just had to keep jacking. The car seemed like it was raising, and it was, but suddenly it stopped raising and the engine kept going.
You might need to loosen the bracket going from the tranny area to the exhaust pipe. I don't think this is gumming up the works, but it can wedge things up a bit and possibly snap a joint loose on your exhaust, especially with your amount of rust.

Too true. It reminds me of the time I pulled an engine out of a W124, you sometimes forget just how much the weight of an engine compresses the front springs....
