I have cleaned some small pieces of stuff that got wet with electrical contact cleaner and/or electric motor cleaner then let it sit for an extended period of time and it worked. You can get the cleaner in bulk, which you might need. Take your time it may be that you don't have to replace that much. I think the biggest problem will be any and all insulation and padding.

One of my early Palm Pilots got wet and quit working; I put it in a small vacuum oven at work and left it on "barely warm" for a day with the vacuum pump running. The Pilot came back to life with no sign of harm.

Most of us don't have vacuum ovens sitting around at home (I don't) but a warm oven, or even a day in the sun, might help dry out those soaked boards.

I'd collect your insurance money, buy the vehicle back for pennies, part it out for whatever it is worth, and find another project. That poor 140 is going to be a nightmare.

yup... it looks like a nightmare... but that's the challenge ain't it? it's considered a loss i agree... what more can i lose except time... but the knowledge that can be gained during that time is priceless. haha

IF it runs... and IF my planned retrofits and simplifications work out... we'll never look at w140s the same again. This has got to be one of the worst cases of 140 rebuilds.

i would rather fix that, much less electricals

The a/c switches if inoperable (most likely) can be easily retrofitted with switches from a euro 124, the one with dials.

i've already removed and gutted the gauge cluster and most of the switches... will post pics later... doesn't seem all that bad once it's been cleaned...
Hi
I, for one, think its great that you're taking on the project.

Have you drained the engine and tranny & rear end - put new oil and tried to rotate the engine?

Good Luck & Best Wishes,
Joseph

ey thanks bro. haven't drained the engine and tranny yet... i'll be doing that in one go... so nothing gets exposed... i'm not hopeful though... i'm prepping myself for a complete engine/tranny swap... so i'm not worried about losing the engine/tranny.... right now i'm much more concerned with the interior and sheet metal.

the 250S? uhhhh... it's much worse... it was close to being junk as it was... i'm probably abandoning her... sell her for scrap maybe...

Thumbs up

locry that looks like an awesome and fun project!! I wish you the best of luck and will hope you keep posting pictures and letting us know how it goes I will be very interested to see your progression!

I think you have a good chance at bringing the electrics back, there is a video I posted in the open discussion of the tv show "5th gear" doing a bunch of quality tests to a 90 Mercedes 300E wagon. One of the test was partially submerging it and all the electrical connections were in water. The mechanic didn't think it could be saved but yet the car pumped the water out of the cylinders with the spark plugs removed and the electrics dried out and all were functional.

Thumbs up *** OH BOY!!! MAMA!!! SHE BE LOOKIN' KINDA' SAD!!! ***

Spray down everything with regular water, then follow up with the distilled water, followed with a good blowjob with the hairdryer, then lube everything that needs lubing and if there's rust, attack that with the recommended chemicals...but I would hesitate on a wholesale spraying of WD40...unless Whiskeydan knows a super-secret trick that the rest of us are just dying to hear about...

As for the rest of the electricals...unless you know EXACTLY where all connectors are, and their related plugs, you're going to be tracking down gremlins 'til the end of the earth...just look at the problems folks have with their cars that are in perfect condition...your baby's been, literally, dragged through the mud and back again, then buried under how many gallons of fish-feces-invested water? And salt-water-atmosphere to boot????

This car will be a learning TOOL only...

The good part of this story (future-wise?) will be that you'll probably be darned close to the only "Nearly-Off-Frame W140 Restorer" that anyone would be able to find on that island.

Heck of a learning curve ahead of you!

Good luck with the project...

BTW: WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WATCH OUT FOR THE AIR-BAG CIRCUITRY!!!

( Need I say more? )

I've designed and maintained complex radio frequency circuits and routinely used WD40 on circuitry with a much higher/critical impedance than anything used here. The idea is to apply a very thin film to act as a vapor barrier. This will preserve a good low resistive path provided there is good mechanical contact.

Oxidation with RF connections acts the same as a noise "diode". Any energy applied to the junction will create unwanted broadband noise. This noise can mask the desired signal. We've found the application of WD40 will prevent this noise over the long haul.

Not really a "super-secret trick" though.

i hear ya... and yeah... i'm wary about the airbag... where are the leads to the bags? and how exactly triggers it?

yep... i'll probably be gutting and labeling everything... pretty sure this car will be relatively usable again. simplified if need be.

To remove the airbag in the steering wheel just remove the two allen cap screws on the back of the wheel, pull the bag out, and unplug the connector. I don't know how you get to the passenger side one on the W140.

The airbag computer probably lives on the top of the trans tunnel at the front of the car, under where the ash tray is.

Yup, before they started making them theft deterrent the bags were easy to remove.

I would be interested to know if the airbag still works. VWs at least form the same years use the same connectors, just touch 12v across it to set it off (from a remote location, of course... there is a LOT of force in one of those!!! A long, old extension cord works well for this!)

Also note that the front seatbelts have airbag like devices on them to tighten the belt in the event of a crash. I don't know if the rear ones have this as well.
