planning an engine swap... a 2.9L 602... and a simplification of some of the systems... most likely the electronic gauges and A/C switches...

Good luck dude :eek: If you get anything electrical in that car going again I'll be amazed. Did you take the door cards off or did the water do that job for you?

At this point you may as well hose the interior out. What harm could a little more water do, eh? :D

I hope you didn't pay much for your u-boat.

That is a major undertaking for a car such as that W140 with all the electrical gizmos that you'll have to individually fix on top of restoring the car to its former glory.

Man I hope you guys will have a break from all the typhoons. I heard there's another one coming?

:) haha... yes, i removed the door cards, and yes i need all the luck i can get... and yes i'm not that confident about the electricals... but who knows. :) worst case i'll be transplanting the inner workings of a 124 gauge cluster... should be easy enough to re-use the 140 gauge faces. The a/c switches if inoperable (most likely) can be easily retrofitted with switches from a euro 124, the one with dials.

i've already removed and gutted the gauge cluster and most of the switches... will post pics later... doesn't seem all that bad once it's been cleaned...

MBeige... yeah, typhoons are common where i'm from, it's just that "one" Ketsana/Ondoy that really hit us hard water volume-wise... we're used to "normal" flooding... we were caught off-guard with that freak Ondoy. :)

I've submerged many electronics under water. As long as you clean it with distilled water, well in your case rubbing alcohol you can get them back.

If the water came really quickly, the shorts might not be that bad. Either way I'm happy to hear you're ok and you've got yourself a hobby for the next year :o

Locry, coming from Manila I know what it means to encounter floods. Luckily for me it was only knee deep, but I heard the floods there were several feet deep.

Our house was spared, water almost got inside. My in-law's home had water go into the first floor just enough to cover your feet.

alcohol? i can use that? i'm just using plain water at the moment...

MBeige... they were lucky... our house got submerged neck deep at the 2ND FLOOR. My folks had to wait for the water to subside as there were no rescue boats. They eventually had to walk out of the house. I wasn't home that time so that's the guilt i have to live with. Thankfully no one in the household got hurt... but i feel for those who were less fortunate.

The 140 is just a project... nothing more. i don't really consider it a loss as others were more affected.

Hopefully i can get the car running eventually, she'll serve as a reminder to be more vigilant when it comes to floods/typhoons, not gonna take anything for granted.

Definitely. Rubbing alcohol will get rid of those crud deposits that can damaged the boards.

Let it air dry for a good week. If you're short on time go and put everything into a sealed box with either dry rice or silicate gel.

I'm actually interested to see if such a submersion can be recovered from. If it works send a letter to MB with before and after pictures :cool:

As long as you clean the pcbs up really well using a toothbrush with denatured alcohol and don't have any resistive paths due to oxidation they should work OK.
A thin film of WD40 after drying will prevent any further oxidation.

How long was it under? Fresh or saltwater?

fresh muddy water. it doesn't look promising though, as there are some solder points that are a bit rusty

I wouldn't walk away from that...I'd run. Junk it and find something to replace it with - that car will never be right again (and will always smell funky to boot).
