Question Nailing noise from under the valve cover

92 300SD It's running great but on idle it makes the nailing noise, or nooking noise, the noise comes and goes but it's not loud, in fact you need to rally focus in order to hear the nailing noise. Some mechanic told me that it was the lifter that need it to be replace. Another told me the lifter will do the noise continiously, probably it was the vacum pump by teh fuel injection pump. Another mechanic told me may be was the oil pump that was not keeping the same pressure constanly. My oil gage is on 1 when is hot on idle, is on 3 when is cold on idle. I don't know what to think.

I think you need to do a valve adjustment and inspect everything while the valve cover is off.

You can rule out lifter noise (if you haven't already done the lifter check with the valve cover off.) Change the oil to Mobil 1 'turbo diesel truck' 5W-50. Lots of folks, myself included, have noticed noisy lifters get quiet with it.

Is your oil pressure steady at those numbers?

no valve adjustment with hydrolic valve lifters.

I heard some like that with this type of model. So you're saying that this valves adjust them selfs automatically? Also in your opinion what you think is the problem. The oil pressure stays at 1 while is hot in idle in goes up to two at 30 mph and three at 40mph. But when is cold stays in 3 at all time until warms up.

I believe the OM60x had hydralic lifters. Will be interesting to see...

The '92 300SD should be a W140 with the OM 603.971

It has hydraulic lifters - no valve adjustment like with the OM616/617. If they tick, you can switch to a synthetic oil. It may help (5W-40 Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck seems to be recommended pretty well). If it still ticks, you can go as far as replacing the lifters. There have been a couple threads about ticking lifters recently. Here's one: Oil flush and curing a noisy lifter Use at your discretion.

Yes, with oil pressure-to an extent.

That sounds normal unless you have the 'dancing needle' then you need O-rings on the tube that goes down the center of the oil filter.

Great, then I rule out the oil pump. I will get the mobil 5-40 and see what it does. Do you think I will need any addities like Lucas to reinforce the oil?

I doubt you'll need any. Give the new oil a few hundred miles and if it's only worn lifters you'll hear the difference.
