Battling same problem in my 1987 TD. I changed fluid recently -- 2000 miles ago -- and that helped a lot. Now though lately it wont' go out of 2nd once the engine is warm. Its almost the exact same symtoms as you Chris.
I still haven't found time to diagnose. I have a good spare tranny ready if i need it. I'm thinking of swapping bowden cable first and seeing if that helps. The 1987 Transmissions don't use Vacuum to control the shift points i don't think . They use the bowden cable. vacuum softens the shifts but the bowden cable controls the shift points. Thanks.

Not sure if this helps.
I had an issue once in a while that my bowden cable was sticking. It was unpredictable and I had a hard time to figure it out first . If the bowden cable is sticking the shift points are very high as if you are accelerating hard. I found out when I stopped the engine (after it happened and I found the cable not returning to its stop position. However the trans is shifting in this event, shift point are just very high. |

Problem Solved. Wohoo! it was the tranny cooler for me. it was plugged and tranny would overheat and not shift. Always worked when cold but after long drives it would start not shifting and slipping occassionally. So check that radiator. You could probably add an aftermarket cooler easy enough if you don't want to spring 350 for new radiator with integral tranny cooler.
