W210 instrument cluster problems

Our 1996 E300D (W210, OM606NA) with 264000 miles has two instrument cluster problems:

1. Even though the float switch in the oil pan has been replaced, the "low oil" warning comes on after the car has been driven a few miles. The warning can be reset with the button. The engine is not low on oil; has never been low on oil.

2. The low fuel warning light illuminates when the tank is full but not as it approaches empty. This one I can understand; in the 210, "low fuel" is sensed electronically rather than by contacts on the float as in older models. It appears that the small surface-mount IC that runs this function has failed.

Has anyone had and fixed either of these problems? Is there a shop that can make a component-level repair or do they just replace the entire PC board? That would be an expensive fix; we can live with both of these irritations rather than spend hundreds of dollars.

Jeremy - I also had the low oil message prior to reaching opterating temp and turning right or left at turn signals. It continued after replacing the sender. Adjusting the electrical connector for a tighter fit resolved that for me.

Can't help with #2.

The connector at the float switch or at the instrument cluster?

Connector

IIRC, that was the first thing I did, in June 2008, even before replacing the float switch in November 2008. I also cleaned and tightened the connector when I replaced the switch. I'll check it again but my concern, apart from something in the instrument cluster, is damaged insulation on a wire.

[edit]

Checked the connector, it is clean and tight and making a good connection. The rubber/plastic part of the connector appears to be the original part from the factory and it is somewhat deteriorated. The insulation on the wire is falling apart as the '96 and similar models tend to do, however there is no place for the wire to short-circuit and the stranded wire itself is solidly soldered to the connector.

I left the center section of the belly pan off so I can do some experiments in daylight, see what happens with the connector unplugged or shorted to ground.
