Talking 500K Miles on the 300D

I turned over 1/2 million today, someplace in VA. Now I'm working on the next 500K.

Did I not read somewhere that some tradition dictates that when a car reaches some mileage milestone your supposed to drive it at 100 MPH when the odometer changes digits

LOL, unfortunately I was on a pretty windy two lane road trying to find my way back the the highway at the moment.

At some point I just got sick of the 85mph speedo and replaced it, but I did correct the mileage.

If anything, the actual is probably a couple of 100 miles higher because I once drove home from KS with the speedo cable disconnected due to a broken plastic gear in the speedo.

Yup, now I can start putting serious miles on it.

The "new" engine is great, I have about 60K miles on it now. Idles smoothly at about 550 rpm, very little oil consumption, good power, etc. I just replaced all the injectors to get rid of a pretty good knock (they must have been original). I'm guessing this engine has about 200K (which is what the seller claimed).

Good to hear, its really a roll of the dice with used motors as you know. Sounds like you made out.

Yup, it took me three engines to get a good one. Next time I'm getting a rebuilt, shopping for used engines is too much hassle. Hopefully I won't have to deal with it for a while.

Next mission: it needs painting.

Send it to Metric. My friend has his 606 head with them and they seem to do a pretty good job. They got out the two stuck glow plugs, replaced all the intake valves and some of the springs along with a bunch of other stuff. Cost him $1,500 but its going to be as good as new when he gets it back.

Yup, I was planning on buying a reman metric engine this time, but my indy talked me out of it. I think he overestimated the availability of good used 617s, it's getting hard to find low mileage engines. It basically took three months to get a good one delivered. That's what happens when you get cheap.
