Exclamation 616 Injector Nasties

Compression test today:

1: 320 psi
2: 320 psi
3: 380 psi
4: 340 psi

Looks good, but I looked at the injectors, and there was seemingly a lot of carbon build-up around the tip and on the heat shield and in the seat. Pre chambers look black, but not a lot of build up. On injector #3, there is this sliminess below the threads, but about 1 cm about the tip. I hope what I've heard about WVO isn't true, I hope this is just normal for 250,000 miles. Engine starts, runs, drives fine.

Urgent: should I try to clean up the seat before putting injectors back in?

Pictures are in ascending order.

You have killed your engine!!! Nooooo!

just kidding :-)

My '82 prechamber's looked just like this, and had never seen any WVO or biodiesel at that point.

Carefully use brake cleaner soaked q tips and clean out the heat shield seats once you remove the heat shields and before replacement.

Next time, give the engine a through hose down before removing the injectors to prevent any crap from getting down there (ie maple tree propellers).

Now I remember being able to see into your prechamber better. It almost looks like there are heat shields in there still. In the pictures of the prechambers I put up, I had already taken out the heat shields.

And yes, I realize I should've cleaned up, but that was after I had started taking **** apart.

God, thats a lot of build up. All that is also builing up on your rings which will cause them to start sticking.

Stop using WVO.

Cylinder 1 and 2 aren't bad but i wouldn't want the numbers much lower.

Hmm, probe in there a little more. Not out of the realm of possibility some genius mechanic in the past just put new heat shields in without taking the old ones out. It does sort of look like they are still there.

See if that is indeed carbon build up or what not. Did you do a diesel purge recently?

Be really careful, don't drop more gunk into the prechamber.

When you're done with this whole exercise, I think for your own sanity it would be wise to check your injection temperature on your greasecar kit. I can show you how to do that at some point.

Compression numbers are not stellar. In my opinion, the pictures are indicative of WVO temperature too low when switching over. As dieseldan stated, it is a good idea of checking the temperature. Also, making sure a full purge during shut down is important. You don't want WVO on cold start ups.

I just swapped out the injectors in my 240. My #4 looked a lot like your #4. I think my #4 isn't getting hot enough. It's at the end of the injector line heater that I have and I think the end of it isn't hot enough.

Arlight, well if those are still heat shields in there, they're not coming out without a fight.

Those pictures you took does not look like heat shields are in there.

Just for clarification, you did remove a heat shield from each of the chambers before taking the pictures?

Yes, hence the heat shield next to each injector. I looked at a picture on diesel giant for a 617 and it looked different. Turbo thing?

Clean everything away, cover the IP outlets with a paper towel and turn the engine over with the starter.

thatll blow them out (or other crap).

It'd definitely time to check your temp.

Do you have a solid bolt in your fuel filter?

Having just done the Frybrid conversion I have this stuff on the brain...

I did that when I was testing compression. I'm guessing it's an engine difference thing. I have the solid bolt. We'll check the temp. I'm not ready to condemn VO just yet...

Alright, everything reinstalled, now there's some injector nailing at idle. I was careful not to let anything touch the injector pintels. eff this.

Figure out which injector is nailing first.

Did you re-torque carefully to 80 nm for the injectors?

Go for a drive, stay on D2 for now.

Is it nailing nailing or just sounding different?
